A Boston and Albany branch train derailed near Pe’er Station in Mass after a broken rail at about half a mile west of the station. Twenty passengers were injured, many seriously, but no fatalities reported. The mishap occurred shortly after departure from Springfield.
John G Hayes of Scranton Pennsylvania a 44 year old superintendent at People’s Coal community is hospitalized at Bellevue after a street assault he says jan hit him in the face and stole a diamond ring a watch a chain and 50 dollars cash valued at 8 dollars for the ring and watch. Physicians say he will recover while he is treated for an assault.
Bedford April 2 thirty junior boys are suspended after nailing their colors atop the high school flagpole. Girls respond by wearing streamers and threatening a strike unless suspensions are dropped. In a separate note from Washington on April 24 John A Benson, California land operator, is found not guilty of charges related to employee allegations at the General Land Office.
A violent storm swept the middle west from Nebraska to Pennsylvania with high winds heavy rains hail and some snow. A deadly tornado struck Douglas Kansas killing one person and injuring others while destroying homes and schools. Oklahoma Oklahoma towns saw wrecked buildings and orchards as the storm moved eastward toward Wisconsin Michigan and Illinois. No deaths reported outside Kansas but damage extended to Brule Nebraska and Butler County Kansas with several injuries and property losses.
New York April 20 The American Sugar Refining Company a New York subsidiary allegedly ran a long running scheme to defraud the U S government of duties by rigged weigh scales on Brooklyn docks It is claimed 75 million pounds of sugar were smuggled with duties unpaid totaling about 1 25 million dollars The case known as the seventeen holes details how a hidden spring and a hole in each scale misrepresented weight A government inquiry led by Richard Parr and a Treasury officer uncovered the method and involved laborers including a tally man Richard Whalley and dock workers The article notes the company denies knowledge of the fraud and says the matter is under government action Continued on Pay Three
Indiana rumors claim a coordinated plan by the Beveridge and Fairbanks camps to unseat Senator Albert Beveridge. Hemenway and Watson are seen as key allies of the Fairbanks machine, aiming to return former VP Charles W. Fairbanks to the Senate as Beveridge works to secure reelection.
St Louis April 24. For the second time within a year pretty Elizabeth Yabb fourteen has been robbed of her long hair. Early Wednesday morning a negro crept into her bedroom and while she slept cut off a braid eighteen inches long and escaped. The earlier theft occurred last October.
Helen A. Marden of Somerville and Porter Smith of Chicago, a Smith College senior and a Dartmouth graduate, were engaged last year but broke it off. He shot her on the campus in Northampton then killed himself. both died within hours. Crime stunned students as details emerged of the final plea and tragic confrontation.
Tamaqua Pennsylvania April 26 four men were killed and four badly hurt in an explosion at the Polls Powder Company glycerine milling house in Reynolds four milles apart today. Only portions of the bodies of the dead are recoverable while the wounded will recover. The dead are John Applegate George Durst L M Humble and W A Stevens. The explosion is believed caused by grit becoming infused with the explosive in the grinding mill.
The cruiser New York, formerly Admiral Sampson's flagship, now at Boston navy yards after months of repairs, will be placed in commission on May 15 and head to the Mediterranean to join the North Carolina and Montana near Turkey.
Ohio reports state Labor Commissioner William T. Lewis funeral at 2 PM from the family home 670 East Spring Street. Departments to close. many state officials to attend. Lewis family arrived from Cleveland Wednesday evening with widow Mary Lewis and daughter Irene.
In Chicago on April 20 a massive fire destroyed the Miners Central railroad elevator. One firefighter Lieutenant William Meliligol died, two workers missing, six injured. Logs estimated loss between 800000 and 1000000 dollars. Lightning considered trigger. A fireboat and downtown engines responded as explosions and dust storms raged. Fire spread halted within an hour with several elevators nearby spared. Washington report follows: treasury receipts 2 125991 disbursements 2250000.
The navy plans major refits for the sixteen battleships that circled the globe. Changes include removing masts and superstructure and adopting a "waste basket" mast for improved armor alignment, with aim to raise ships in water and regain combat readiness by June.
