Man who escaped tells his story in Herrin mine violence

A man detained by Herrin police claimed he was hired to repair tracks at a strip mine and forced into mob action during the Herrin mine trouble. He said four colleagues quit after learning conditions were misrepresented and he was paid with a $26.50 check before being jailed and later released. He denied strike breaking, citing his union-father in law and intent to avoid Herrin if he knew true conditions.
