Rumors fly over the mine siting with officials unsure if coal is being mined today. A truck and touring car carrying strike breakers was shot at near Carbondale injuring several, including auto driver Sidney Morrison fatally. Police and officials pursue raids on area hardware stores for ammunition and firearms.
At a Wednesday conference in the office of C R Hol ington General Secretary of the Greater Marion Association a Citizens Committee was formed to visit Southern linolg Coal Company officials and urge suspending strip mine operations during the coal strike. Members C R Edrington A B McLaren R B Mitchell and W H Rix named to select committee representing Marion business leaders and United Mine Workers of America. The plea aims to prevent disorder protect life and avoid federal troops in the county.
Coroner's inquest in Herrin found Earl Erwin killed David Clark using a revolver on June 14. A coroner's jury without bond held Erwin to await grand jury action. Witnesses described Clark fleeing before Erwin fired three shots striking Clark and his child. Clark tried to escape after being shot. Jury included Walter Rushing and others. Water works report notes Marion water remains properly filtered and sterilized per state standards.
Harry Woods boasts the season’s largest Marion area fish after landing a 5 lb 3 oz specimen Tuesday at the Country Club. A 4 lb 8 oz catch was the next largest reported this year.

After a five hour session the Coal Belt Electric Company petition for a car service reduction between Marion Herrin and Carterville saw no decision. The commission reserved its ruling. Attending were Hal Trogillion and George Pillow for the commission, L O Whitwell, Trainmaster J Sims, R C White, O B Coyne for Iron Mountain, Mayor A T Pace, John Herrin, W J Harmon for Herrin and C R Edrington, J Pfeffer and D Kelley for the Greater Marion Association. Circuit court adjourned with no cases heard. Jury discharged and July term set. Mack Allen of Johnston City and Ruel Youngblood visited Marion friends.
M Ferguson a 48 year old sunyside mine fireman was shot and killed by his wife Ara A Ferguson at 1108 West Stollar Hervin about 830 p m Saturday after he attacked her with a pitchfork and hammer during a dispute witness Mrs Scythia Senter said the wife claimed self defense inquest heard testimony from the couple's children and neighbors noting prior abuse the coroner's jury exonerated the wife and recommended no charge
Logan Meadows remains in county jail while Mrs Florence Ryan is free on bond after police found goods believed stolen at both homes Sunday. At Meadows near Pea body Mine No 2 investigators recovered six overcoats and fine suits, one overcoat later sold for 3 to Charles Lee. At Ryan’s home dresses sheets bed spreads a fur coat and other items valued about 200 were found, some linked to a Lough burglary. James Everetts’ home was searched, Mrs Everetts arrested, and silk hose found tucked in chair cushions.
The summer term at the 8S. I. N. O. at Carbondale opens Wednesday with Marion students planning to attend. Principal Arno Bratten of Marion Township High School will teach Medieval and Modern History and American History this six week term ending July 2. One credit toward MTHS graduation is allowed for summer work. Local high school students Irisell Wallace, Marshall Walker, Charles Rodd, and Miriam Lightfoot plan to attend.
Guards at the Southern Illinois Coal Company mine near Crenshaw exchanged fire with an invading party. The first shots occurred at 3 10 p m on Wednesday as the party descended the track through the cut. About five hundred shots were exchanged before the clash subsided.
Sub-District 12 Mine Workers leader W J Sneed investigated a strip mine operation between Marion and Herrin. He reported a non union jurisdiction claim and questioned an agreement with the Steam Shovel Men's Union. A. F. of L. officials stated the union was suspended years earlier and designated its members as outlaw strike breakers.
Floyd Sherrard a Johnston City School boy drowned Sunday morning in Jeffrey Mine Pond when an automobile tire used as a buoy slipped from under him. Witnesses Clarence Ferro Rudulph Werro and others testified the boy sank after four attempts to stay afloat. his body was recovered by Clarence West and Ray Cole. The coroner ruled accidental drowning.
Governor Small announced bids for the Marion to Benton road segment as part of a 1922 program to build one thousand miles of hard roads. C. R. Miller and Frank T. Sheets were called to Waukegan to push the road program despite the governor’s absence for a trial. The Marion to Benton stretch includes 4.13 miles between Benton and West Frankfort, 4.84 miles between West Frankfort and Johnston City, and 1.80 miles between Marion and Johnston City, completing the Marion to Benton route and bringing the yearly total to 770 miles, within 440 miles of the goal.
White Plains Pa June 21 Pinkerton detectives today declared that the blackmail alleged by Walter Ward the millionaire as the cause of his slaying of Clarence Jeters was traceable to a love nest reported to have been maintained by Ward in New York Neighbors said in such a procession of women there were new faces every day Ms Markc Woodley and Mrs A B McLaren went to St Louis Wednesday on a short business trip and will go from there to Granite City to attend the annual home Missionary conference to be held there Thursday and Friday
The remains of Ira Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. N. Moore of 609 East Marion Street, were laid to rest with full military honors by the American Legion. Moore, electrocuted at the Royalton C. L P S Company substation, died in Herrin hospital on Thursday. Pallbearers were fellow C. L P S Company employees. a color guard and bugler accompanied the service, and Chaplain Arlie Boswell gave the prayer at the cemetery.
Canteloupes from California are on the local market along with produce from Georgia and tropical regions. Imperial Valley melons blend with peaches from Georgia, watermelons, pineapples, and bananas from tropical sources. Northern Illinois cherries fetch 20 cents a quart, while raspberries, dewberries, early apples, currants, lemons, peas, beans, onions, radishes, lettuce, and asparagus add to a diverse summer assortment.
The Southern Illinois Gas Company plans a major buildout in Du Quoin with a $350,000 city project and more than $1,000,000 in statewide improvements. A new land tract south of town will host a gas plant with several large holders and extended mains to all city districts. A pipeline from Ava field will connect Du Quoin Murphysboro and other towns, with gas mixed from field and manufactured sources.
In Urbana on June 19, W P Plint state entomologist says eradication efforts are underway in Carbondale and Murphysboro to curb malaria by eliminating breeding sites. The Lion's Club backs Carbondale's effort with Illinois Central railroad help to control nearby swamp land. In St Paul Arthur Laner, 27, killed a 60 pound gray wolf in the city limits after it attacked him on his way home, beating its brains out on the pavement.

Colonel Samuel N Hunter and Major Robt W Davis arrived in Marion to investigate disorder at the Southern Illinois Coal Company's strip mine. After a conference with Sheriff Thaxton and local officials, Hunter stated troops will not be used and civil authorities are capable of handling any emergency.
The Frick Family held their annual reunion at Heyde Park on Sunday with an all day picnic and noon dinner. About 140 members from Williamson County attended despite bad weather. Officers were reelected: President B. Prick Johnston City, Vice President Roy Parsons Marion, Secretary Paul Frick Herrin, Treasurer Chas Parker Johnston City.
