The Norman Home Coming Association held its seventh annual gathering at Williamson County Fair Grounds. J Milton Norman reelected president, Rev J W McKinney delivered an excellent address. Despite rain delaying events, attendees enjoyed speeches, singing, and a large noon spread.
The Patoka Patoka annual conference of the M E Church South closed with pastorate assignments. A M Stickney was assigned to the Marion charge succeeding M A Cox. W T Graham returns to Stonefort and will reside in this city. C Henley named presiding elder Murphysboro district. W T Mathis remains in Murphysboro. Many appointments listed including Stickney at Marion and Graham at Stonefort with district officials named.
A chaotic scene at Moose Hall as the Marion Fire Department battles a blaze sparked by electrical wires. Horace Gamble, alleged killer of Avery Henry, fled before deputies recovered from the inquest findings. Coroners ruled Henry’s death a gunshot paid by Gamble and urged holding him for grand jury action.
A shooting early Saturday at the Patch near Pittsburg left a man and a woman seriously injured. Otto Kincaid was arrested and jailed in Marion after being rushed to West Frankfort in an ambulance. police say the woman’s wound was accidental. Kincaid drank prior to arrest and remains in jail as officials probe the motive amid a Negrod-occupied mining district.
Williams Prairie presents the second annual William County Singing Convention on Sunday September 4 at the Fair Grounds led by Rev J W McKinney president. The all day event includes a noon basket dinner and a 2 pm choir contest for entries of at least twelve voices. The banner prize will go to the best choir in Williamson County formerly held by Williams Prairie Church Choir.
Williameson County mine locals choose delegates for the International Convention of United Mine Workers opening in Indianapolis on September 20. Local 1880 Peabody Number Three elected John Anderson and Floyd Tippy joins others likely to be announced later.
Herrin baseball dropped an 11 to 1 home defeat to Centralia on Tuesday. It was the third straight loss, following a Sunday setback to Marion. Herrin remains scheduled for a Harrisburg series to finish the week.
Coroner Henry McCown held an inquest in Herrin after Ezra Cox died from a stab wound. He identified William Holland as the assailant, and the jury ordered Holland held for grand jury action. The incident occurred August 16 at Carrie Dodds home in Weaver.
The Republican reports Dr J W Cummins will return from vacation this week and fill his regular pulpit on Sunday the 28th after his pleasant vacation, with the note that he will be back by Thursday or Friday.
The Republican Leader requests donations or sales of old rags suitable for wiping machinery. Rags must be clean and free of excess grease or bolts. Organizers seek practical, usable textile remnants from supporters.
