Agricultural letter argues silos are now proven, cost effective, and durable for farmers. It cites a Pennsylvanian dairy trial led by Prof. C G Williams showing silage fed cows produced more milk and butter fat at lower feed cost, with higher net profit than grain rations. It lists seven silo benefits for efficiency, herd size, digestion, and storage, concluding silos remain a merit in dairy farming.

California peaches and Chinese labor on a California ranch

M A Wallace writes from Corning California about peach curing sheds where peaches arrive in trays and are treated with sulfur to reveal rot. He notes Missouri peaches chosen for curing, visits Chinese camps, and compares Chinese and white labor on peach farms, praising Chinese efficiency. He describes Stanford Ranch, its wine production, and Vina’s saloon-dominated town, arguing saloons do not fuel prosperity. August 25 1885.
