It predicts tax shifts from cities to the countryside, raising state and county revenue while advancing tax relief for some owners and higher burdens for others.

A Missouri election sends voters to decide a constitutional amendment for a Single Tax system. Henry George advocates warn the plan would reduce land values and force relocation of rural and urban property holders. Opponents argue the reform would exempt buildings and wealth tied to land, destabilizing farms and cities. The large funding from single tax supporters could shape the November ballot.
A proposed Missouri law by the Single Tariff would tax only land and franchises while exempting stocks bonds mortgages money buildings automobiles and other personal property. Under this plan John D Rockefeller could become a citizen and shield assets worth billions from taxation, shifting the tax burden to land.
A peculiar feature of the coming Single Tax election is that the man who fails to vote on the amendment really votes for it. The Single Taxers require only a majority of the votes on that one question. If you are against exempting all personal property, buildings, notes, banks, etc from taxation, be sure to vote No on the amendment Nov 6.
