Carve History on Totem Pole in Tulalip Reservation
William Shelton, an American Indian artist described as a historian, works for five years on a massive totem pole carved from a Tulalip cedar. The pole, nearly seven feet in diameter and taller than a man, will stand before the Tulalip school to preserve the tribe’s hereditary history for generations. Shelton rejects worship connotations, sees the pole as a woodcarved history of modern events and the World War I era, highlighting his patriotism and war-era fundraising efforts.
