Banana Trade From Central America Feeds New Orleans Markets
George W. Danforth of Charlestown writes from Bluefields Central America about bananas shipped via steamers to New Orleans and Mobile. Each steamer carries 12 000 to 20 000 bunches bought at 30 cents per bunch and loaded for 3 cents. They sell for over $1 a bunch in New Orleans, with two trips per month. A shipper notes a $25 000 profit last month. Bananas are sourced 65 miles up Pinefields river from plantations. fruit is produced year round, trees must be cut to harvest, ripe bunches cannot be shipped and are given away at the wharf. Shippers also feed hogs with bananas to profit hog-raising.

Newsum Convicted In Murder Trial
Last Saturday week the jury in the trial of Frank Newsum before Judge Shackleford at Jackson returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree. He was sentenced to be hanged at Jackson on July 27 but a stay of execution was granted and the case appealed to the Supreme Court. Newsum killed Gray, a saloon keeper at New Madrid while drunk. The case was tried at Jackson on a change of venue.

The Banister Brothers show opened on time last Friday but failed to perform in the expected order. County licensing cost 65 while the town charged 2.50.
