Andrew Newton of Gasconade was 68 on Sunday October 11 and honored by a grand surprise dinner. His children, brothers, sisters, families, friends, and neighbors brought well filled baskets and gathered near where he was born and raised. He is father of P. W. Newton, Mansfield businessman, and the event drew many to celebrate with him.
The remains were brought Tuesday morning for a funeral at the Methodist church Wednesday at 10 30 conducted by Rev B D Jones. He died at 40 years 4 months and days after an operation in Omaha Nebraska Sunday evening nine minutes after nine. He had been in good health and had taken a lay off for the National Letter Carriers Association meeting last week. His wife received word on Thursday that he was well and enjoying the trip, then a telegram that evening urged her to come at once. Amos Rey accompanied her. they reached Omaha where the operation had been performed the night before. Joe expressed pain but said he would make the effort and died at two minutes after nine Sunday. Amos Ray was present. the wife was overwhelmed. They returned Monday morning, arriving Tuesday. The Woodman lodge received the remains at the depot and had charge of the funeral, with interment at Matateld cemetery.
A 45 year old farmer, Paddleford, was found dead nine miles south of Ava in Dooghos county after his gun fired while he pulled it through a wire fence. The 12 gauge Winchester rifle discharged, the coroner ruled accidental. He leaves a wife and a 15 year old son and an aged mother. He had planned to go to California soon.
Prowton Hesterly, county clerk of Douglas County, died Wednesday evening about three at the county seat. Typhoid fever is believed to be the cause and the funeral is set for Thursday. Hesterly was a Mason and several Royal Arch Chapter No 122 of Mansfield attended the funeral.
The famed old spoon at Rilo monastery, in use for over 20 years with centuries of predecessors, has stirred soup for thousands of refugees fleeing Turk persecution. The monastery, built in medieval times, stands as a historic sanctuary amid upheaval.
Mrs Chas Beach entertained her Sunday school class at 7 o’clock dinner last Saturday. The evening featured music and a leaf contest won by Nora Kiley for most leaves and Verda Turner for least. Attendees included Drue Turner, Orren Moore, Frank White, Louis Quigley, Tomer Mensiey, Deore Freeman, Nora Riles, Ora Hippie, Frans Hippie, Lula Surter, Rebecca Hell, Verba Tarner, Belle Bonnell, Opal Freeman, Myrtle Tripp, Low Tripp, Renda Ripper, Verda Denois, Verda Moore, Meda Deavers, Sopha Freeman, and Sophia Nouver.
A group including Jen Morris Will Reynolds Sam King Mardin Rivpee Cecil Boover and Air King ventured Tuesday night in pursuit of an O'Possom. They traveled about five miles and returned home around 11 o'clock tired but with the target supposedly secured. No lunch was taken no gun or whisky involved. the tale ends with them bringing the spoils home.
A Democratic speaker from Alabama drew interest last evening at the Opera House. The Wansfeld Commercial Band performed to a good crowd as Dr. Wa Hamilton introduced the speaker. The talk lasted about an hour and a half, keeping the audience lively, before the speaker departed on the 8:42 train.
