Mrs. Gertrude Golden and her daughter Margaret host a reunion with Dora Soldwedel now 89, an old school friend who visited from Pekin. The pair, separated by about eighty years since their school days, enjoyed a pleasant afternoon at the Golden Homestead in Spring Lake Community.
Commander-elect Stuart Thomas presided at the Hill-Palmer Post meeting. A committee was formed to assist the Auxiliary with the Mason County Council meeting on October 26. Plans were set for an Armistice Day program on November 11. A coal supply committee was named for the meeting hall. Refreshments followed with Auxiliary serve by Mesdames DeVore Fox and Hubbard. Next meeting is November 12 at 7 p.m.
Joseph Hobbs and his mother Mrs Della Hobbs have the front porch of their Washington Street home enclosed with glass windows. Workmen repair the residence of Dr and Mrs Jos Sparks and cover the exterior with brown siding. The Gilmore boys have spent spare moments scraping paint on the Harold Gilmore home in preparation for a new paint job.
The Forman Unit held an Institute day as faculty attended the English and Literature Clinic in Mason City. A reading consultant led morning sessions for first and second grades while the afternoon focused on sixth grade language. Over thirty county teachers attended both sessions at Mason City High School auditorium. Superintendent Joseph Hobbs declared the day an Institute day.
Mr and Mrs John Veerman of Pekin announce the birth of a daughter at Pekin Hospital on Monday October 8 weighing 8 pounds 13 ounces Joyce Renee is the child of Mrs Veerman formerly Jean Callaway daughter of Mrs Bertha Callaway of Spring Lake Community
Mr and Mrs Charles Embree of Forest City welcome a son born at Pekin Hospital on October 6. The child is named Edward Henry. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Clarence Fornoff and Mr and Mrs Harry Embree.
Mr and Mrs Richard Hammer welcomed a nine pound ten ounce son at Pekin hospital on Monday October 8. This is the Hammers fifth child and third son.
Members of the Forman F H A Unit I Chapter held a food sale Saturday in Monroes Cafe at Manito netting 48.40. A special cake baked and decorated by Mrs Walter Kennedy won by Shirley Palmer. Eloise Wahlfeld reporter thanks all who helped and the leader and members express gratitude.
Cpl. Raymond Smith is on a twenty day leave from Fort Worden Washington. Staff Sgt Arthur Schimmelpfennng is home for twenty days with the Jake Schimmelpfennigs and friends in Manita and Pekin. Pvt Wayne Strawbridge and his wife of four months visited his parents in Delavan area after four months stationed at Carswell Air Base Fort Worth Texas.
Mrs. Glen Smith and Mrs. Elizabeth Parkin returned home from Geneva with their sons Pfc. Richard Smith and Pfc. Larry Parkin who are stationed at Sampson Air Base. Both mothers report their sons are in excellent health and spirits and continuing their high school work as part of their Air Corp basic training.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Wistehuff and Jimmie were Friday evening guests of Mr and Mrs Don Colbert of South Pekin.
The new hot lunch program started full scale on Monday October 1 at Foman Senior High and Grade School. Noonday meals are served cafeteria style in the new dining hall. Mrs. Leonard Hewitt supervises the project with Mrs. Loma Van Laningham as head cook and assistants Mrs. Dewey Risen and Mrs. Myrtle Schierbeck. Girls from the Home Economics class act as waitresses during rush hours. To handle daily demand meals are served in shifts to avoid lines.
President Truman has proclaimed October 7 13 as Fire Prevention Week to stress preventing fires. The notice highlights deaths and injuries from fires, and the destruction of nearly one billion dollars in resources annually. It calls Manitans to keep yards and buildings tidy and free of fire hazards.
The Illinois Department of Conservation outlines fall seasons and limits for Duck Goose and Coot from Oct 26 to Dec 9 with a Maywood limit of four ducks and two Canada geese, plus coot limits of ten. Rabbit runs Nov 11 to Jan 15 with eight bag limit. Pheasant Nov 11 to 25 noon opening, cock birds two per day. Quail Nov 11 to Dec 11 noon opening, ten per day. Public area Alexander county closed.
Grangers Elevator Market reports corn prices for Oct 20 and 15 deliveries at 1.64 and 1.61 respectively. Not many beans arriving due to rains, but Wednesday afternoon several loads of good quality grain were received though heavy with moisture.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ethell of Manito will mark their sixty sixth wedding anniversary on Monday October 15. In good health, they tend their Hickory Grove Hill country home, as five sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren join the community in sending best wishes.
Morris Rader publisher of the Glasford Gazette and Manito Community Express relocates his printing plant to a new 32 by 70 foot one story building on Main Street opposite Glasford Lumber Co. The site includes two front offices a central composing and press room a rear furnace and garage with oil heating and modern ventilation. An eight page press is installed as workers finish the move and well wishers offer congratulations.
Donald Payton’s comedy If Mother Only Knew chosen by Forman High School junior class for a November 9 performance. Tryouts completed and cast selected. committees to aid in production to be announced.
A subscriber from Manito thanks residents who visited after a fire and praises the Manito Fire Department for their quick response and effective work. The note expresses gratitude to the community and firefighters, signed by Mra Charles Harbaugh.
The Wilton Building housing Seymour Clothing Store in Manito has been cleaned and refreshed with blue accents. Norton Brenner, manager, is arranging stock for the grand opening this Saturday in the upgraded business block formerly Seymour Clothing.
Roy White chaired the Rotary meeting Tuesday and introduced Howard Bell from Petersburg as the evening speaker. All members attended except one, with guest Leonard Hewitt of Forman School unit present. Next week Rotary will host the Kiwanis Club of Kilbourne.
The Bishop Community Club will meet Tuesday evening October 16 at the home of Clarence Armbrust. All interested community members are invited to attend.
Bert Golden of Spring Lake surprised residents this morning by delivering a large sack of sweet potatoes. He praised the season's rainfall for good flavor and noted Manito Express ads helped sell his plants, saying an 80 cent ad last spring sold all his sweet potato plants in three days.
