A civic group chairwoman rushes late with an announcement causing timetable disruptions in a newspaper office. Editors must trim and shuffle stories, delaying printing and distribution, illustrating how late copy disrupts schedules and service.
Mr and Mrs John Spaits of Forest City announce the engagement of their daughter Marian to William Gavin son of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Gavin. Marian a Manito Community High School graduate works for General Motors Acceptance and Gavin attended St Beds College Peru and now works at Beverly Package Store. No wedding date set. Joe Meyer is ill at home in the country.
A special April 28 hearing in Forest City reviewed a petition to form a Community Unit District for Manito Forest Area. The petition met six points of the school code and will go to a June 10 election. If approved, the district starts July 1 1950 covering Forest City and Manito high school districts.
Sunday School and worship times are listed for Manito Churches Springlake Church St Pauls Lutheran and Catholic Church. May 7 1950 Mass is at 10 00 a m.
Forest City Federated Church announces Sunday May 14 1950 schedule with Sunday School at 9 45 led by superintendent Byron Kreiling.
Phillip H. Frederick of Manito is among eight top metallurgical engineering scholars at the University of Illinois named to Alpha Sigma Mu. New members were welcomed at a May 5 dinner in the Illini Union.
D. J. Powell leads Sunday School at 9:45 with 200 regulars still needed. Morning Worship at 10:45 features a Mother's Day tribute. the choir assists the minister. Evening service offers the High School Baccalaureate at the High School. Wednesday prayer and study at 7:30 focuses on The Character of Jesus, His Optimism.
The notice lists morning worship and Sunday school times. Lawrence Whiteford leads the Sunday School in DST and Joseph Hobbs presides over the 11 a.m. Morning Worship with DST noted.
The Manite grade school Mothers Club will gather Monday May 15 at 7 30 p m to plan the school day picnic set for May 29 All mothers are requested to attend.
Ronald Johnson will return to Mani to May 31 to spend the vacation with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Byron Johnson and family. He has attended the Jacksonville school for the blind the past year.
Exams for five University of Illinois scholarships will be conducted June 3 in Havana by Joseph W. Hobbs county superintendent. Applicants must be 16 or older and residents. Scholarships include county, agriculture, home economics, and two for veterans' children World War I and II. The test covers English and two of social studies math or natural science.
Manito shows strength at Canton game as Canton rises to victory 5 to 4. Mrs. Dan Jenkins and C. A. Beebe visited Chicago Tuesday and Wednesday with shopping for gifts.
The senior class announces Baccalaureate on May 14 and Graduation on May 19 with special music by seniors. Caps and gowns have arrived as the class prepares for the big events.
The class reviews shorthand at 60 and 80 wpm with weekly three transcripts. Students finish Literature and Life of America and prepare book reports. Geometry and Economics drills continue with daily unit reviews and a full week of tests upcoming.
Charles Wilson reports on MCAS wrap up and final exams. He lists upcoming due dates for notebooks and projects in literature biology and algebra. The class notes test schedules, a canceled biology field trip, and the last day of school on May 18.
This week marks the final full week of the school year with mixed feelings among students. In math, we review the last six chapters from the semester and take tests to determine exemption from the final. Science lab work continues with textbook readings and reading aloud. Citizenship reviews the last two chapters before exams, and we finish with final book reports in prose and poetry. Betty Lou Meyers.
The Illinois Conference of the Methodist Church will convene in Bloomington from June 6 to June 11 with a heavy agenda. Ministers receive one year assignments, except for the General Superintendent. The current pastor is expected to return to Manila. Arvill Seelye and Russell Maas attended a Hudson Motor Co dinner in Sterling Tuesday evening.

The Immaculate Conception Church Altar Rosary Society met at Mrs. Wm. Meyer home with Lorraine Meyer as co host. Plans discussed for a public barn dance. Prizes awarded in Pinochle and Fifty. A two course luncheon served to members and guests. June meeting at Miss Mabel Corbett's home.
Rev and Mrs O A Borchelt and many members of St Paul's Egypt Lutheran Church Ladies League and Tabitha Society attended the annual Lutheran Ladies Aid Association convention in Havana on May 10. The association will convene at St John's Lutheran Church near Bishop next year. Mrs Adolph Budke of Havana was elected President and Mrs John Glick of Mason City elected Secretary. Retiring officers are Mrs Walter Hindahl and Mrs Edward Hirst.
The Benders Service Station sponsored team led by Tommy Strawbridge Paul Clyde Loren Meeker George Willard and Stanley Meyer won the Inter City trophy in an exciting race against nearby teams. The trophy was to be presented Wednesday evening.
Rev David J Powell visited brother Rev P L Powell in Burlington Hospital Iowa where the Manito community knows him. He is convalescing from an Easter Sunday heart attack and was reported much improved during the visit.
Mr and Mrs Charles Hill announce the marriage of their grandson Dinky Shirey to Miss Myra Zimmerman on May 1 1950. The couple will reside in Bloomington where Shirey is employed, following the ceremony in Manita.
Mrs Lila O Hara visited the homes of Mr and Mrs Frank Trowbridge Mr and Mrs Lamar Daniels and Mr and Mrs Wm Searcliff all of Pekin on Sunday
Senior class events include Baccalaureate May 14 at 8 p.m. DST in the Manito/Forest City high school auditoriums. Graduation May 19 at 8 p.m. DST. Other items list Manito Memorial Dance May 30, and a May 12-22 series of activities led by local schools and the American Legion.
Illinois professor Deane G. Carter urges farmers to analyze farm programs before planning buildings. He advocates a long range farmstead plan, phased construction, and prioritizing storage and house improvements this year. County advisers or the Urbana College of Agriculture can assist.
The Tabitha Society of St. Pauls Church met in the church Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Leonard Graff as hostess and welcomed Mrs Adolph Behrends and Mrs Henry Warner as new members. A prayer for Christian homes was given by Rev O A Borchett and Mrs Ben Jacobs spoke on Christian Women In Public Life.Plans were made to attend the Mason county convention in Havana and the Central Illinois sore convention on May 17. The group voted to contribute toward a new tape recorder for the church and Mrs George Handke will host the June meeting.
Mrs D J Powell visits her sister in Colchester Illinois who is recovering from surgery and expects to be away about a week. Other social notes include Mr and Mrs Theodore Bender hosting relatives in the country, and weekend visits among local families. The Manito Grade School Opera was held Tuesday evening with a capacity crowd.
Mr and Mrs George Grob hosted visitors from Peoria last Thursday, welcoming callers who spent time at their home and shared news and conversation.
Mrs. Elsie Willet hosted a Friday evening shower for Marian Seelye as she prepares to marry Clyde Ulrich. Greta Beebe read poems, Josephine Sherer led a bell dance, Vivian Newport reviewed Devil in Massachusetts, and Marian opened many gifts. A buffet with fruit punch lime jelly and cookies followed with helpers in the serving and kitchen areas.
Mr and Mrs Dillard Warner were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs George Bilyeu. Mrs George Bilyeu called on Mrs Harold Palmer and daughter of Easton and Mrs Eldon Keith and daughter of Havana. Mr and Mrs Leroy Parkins and family were Sunday evening callers of Mr and Mrs Harold Selke. When you clean out the attics sell that old stuff with a Want Ad.
