The Manilo Rotary Club met in regular session with Rev. D. J. Powell in charge. Vernon Langston led a song fest, then Howard White of Havana spoke on “A Company of Buns” critiquing welfare state ideas and advocating free economy. A committee was named for an “On to Galesburg” trip April 27 and 28, and a special basketball-team entertainment was planned.
A new Agricultural 4 H Club was organized during National 4 H Club Week March 7 15 in Manita. The group invites boys and girls ages 10 to 21 living north of a line one mile north of Forest City to join. Officers will be elected at the next meeting. Interested individuals should contact Mr Masters at Forman High School Agricultural Department within a week.
Mrs Katherine Herrman was a Tuesday eve supper guest of Mr and Mrs Harold Herrman and Janet. Ed Gray of Omaha visited with Chas Huffman Chas Hill and Ray Hill last week. James Bernshausen Marilyn Wadell Manito and Bill Garlish Tremont surprised Kenneth Thomas with a chivarii Wednesday evening. Rhetta Sue Fletcher returns home after visiting grandparents Cleve Shelabarger. Sunday visitors included Bob Farnam and Randy with Clarence Farnam family. Don Kramer and Christian Mann of Pekin joined Bill Shelabarger guests. Mrs Glenn C Gora and son Stephen spent the weekend with relatives.
Oscar Smith announces the Manito Fans Club as the new 1953 baseball team. A house to house canvas will raise funds with solicitors Robert Smith and Eugene O Shea. A follow up meeting at the Opera House Friday night April 3 to complete plans.
The Mary-Joseph Sunday School Class of the Methodist Church met at Mr and Mrs Gene Marquardt for games and refreshments. Attendees included the Meekers Castner Schumm Powell Bernshausen Wil lett Kathryn Meeker and guests Hilst Clauser Rankin Maloney McCarty Selke Zimmer man Williams Talbott and others with visits from relatives and friends.
The second Union Holy Week Service will be held Sunday at 7 00 p m at the Spring Lake Church Rev Joseph Hobbs will be guest speaker with the Men s Chorus of Manito singing The pastor will be in charge assisted by Rev D J Powell The public is urged to attend these services Timmy Timbrook underwent an appendectomy at Sekin Hospital and is expected to return home Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Velde entertained with a goose dinner Sunday honoring their grandsons Larry and Gary Herrman on their birthday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Sauers and family, Mrs. Sophie Sauers, Hobbs family of Winchester, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lussenhop, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lussenhop, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Parker, Mr. and Mrs. Farold Herrman and Janet, Mrs. Katherine Herrman, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Herrman and sons, and the hosts.
Mrs. Bessie Kastner and Mrs. Nelda Meeker co hosted the Golden Links Sunday School Class gathering at Mrs. Kastner home. The meeting featured a devotional by Mabel Shierbeck on The Darkest Day of the World and prize games for Jesse Ethell Lottie Seelye and Myrtle Farnam. Refreshments followed for attendees including Matilda Bernshausen Laura Velde Stella Frederick Edna Heckman Mayde Powell Mabel Scharlton Kathryn Meeker and the hostess.
Intermediate Girl Scouts met Thursday March 19 1953 at Forman Jr High. Kay Hammer called roll and Wilmar Schimmelpfenning read minutes. Troop number 1 was received and members got American Girl magazines to aid the treasury.
Mr. Clarence Farnam spent the weekend at his home. The brief note records his quiet family time and residence without incident or additional details.
Officers for aiding the Girl Scouts in Manila and Forest City were chosen at a Forman Jr High School meeting. Mrs Lewis Warner is president, Alice Meyer secretary treasurer, Allison Himmel vice president. A bakery sale will benefit the girls at the Catholic Social Center Manila on April 28 starting 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon with coffee sandwiches and more for sale. Please support this group.
Wm. F. Hilst, chairman of the finance committee, reports the annual Boy Scout Drive raised $627.30, up from $588.25 last year. He thanks all solicitors and donors and lists the solicitors and their totals.
The Sacrament of Holy Baptism was given at St Pauls Lutheran Church on Sunday morning March 22 to Sharon Beth Graff daughter of Vernon and her sponsors were Eldon Keith Havana. Avis Teresa Graff daughter of Earl and sponsors were Vernon Graff and Corinne Kruger Bloomington. Linda Jean Hilst daughter of Robert and sponsors were Ivan Hilst. Witness Mae Memmen Peoria.
Cpl. Wayne Durham returned to Manila for a 30 day furlough with wife Alice and parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Durham. A family dinner was held in his honor at his parents' home with relatives from Peoria Pekin and other towns. He will return to Santa Anna California after the furlough.
The Mason County Home Bureau sponsored a group of 128 members from Manila on a Tuesday tour visiting the General Assembly and the Senate. Lunch was at Norman's Coffee Shop, followed by a visit to Dickson's Furniture Store to view an interior decorating movie. Members named include Mesdames Harold Meyer Raymond Meyer Harold Willett James Bernshausen Gene Marquardt and Leona Graff of the Manito unit.
Mr and Mrs Ed Estes and their daughter drove to Yellville Arkansas to visit his parents Mr and Mrs J W Hates over the weekend. They also paused in Marionville Missouri during the trip.
The Tabitha Society of St Pauls Lutheran Church met March 19 with 29 members and two guests. Delegates were chosen for the L W M L Convention in Springfield on May 13. Helen Dierker led the topic Negro Missions and Ella Garlish hosted lunch.
Mrs Elmer Palmer and her son and wife Mr and Mrs Harold Palmer of Haston traveled to Peoria Monday to be with her husband who is seriously ill. Mr and Mrs M H Boyd Mr and Mrs Frank Palmer and Mrs Effie Cox attended pre Master Services at Forest City Church Sunday evening.
