The Manito Optimist Club completes a modern swimming facility featuring a bright blue pool, orange steps, dressing rooms, showers, a refreshment stand, bleachers, and clothing checkouts. The opening signals community pride and a new summer gathering spot for residents from across the area.
The American Legion Auxiliary sales chairwoman Mrs. Thelma Hirst reports 600 poppies sold in Manito last Saturday raising about 70 dollars for rehabilitation and child welfare. Assisting was Mrs. Louella Shirley with volunteers including Rosetta Wilson Pauline Wilson Charlotte Fox Dianne Fox Janet Schleder Jerry Johnson Kay Hammer and Lee Roy Lacey. The group thanks all helpers and donors for the project.
Mr and Mrs Charles Fox of Manita and Mr and Mrs Charles Arms of Pekin will leave Friday for Wisconsin for a week of fishing together.
Dwight Whitaker, son of Mr and Mrs Pierd Whitaker, will receive the Illinois FFA State Award at the June convention in Springfield on June 12 to 14. He will represent Illinois in the regional contest in August at the State fairgrounds, earning $100 and a plaque, for his work in farm mechanics and leadership at Forman High School.

Delegates from Manito and nearby towns attended the Rotary International convention in Chicago at the Chicago Stadium from May 29 through June 2. Vice President Richard Nixon closed the event this morning after a memorial service for deceased servicemen and Rotary members. The Chicago gathering honored Mrs. Paul Harris and featured a pageant recalling fifty years of Rotary with 12 scenes. Mr Knuppel acted as a local delegate and will report to the Manito Rotary Club.

Rene Woods of Houston arrived Wednesday night for a week of visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Paul Woods in Chillicothe. He was met in Chillicothe by his parents.
