A 1952 Illinois forest fire report notes losses 25 times higher than 1951. It cites 1,587 forest fires inflicted damage to woodlands and property, underscoring prevention education from local merchants and groups.

James C. McClellan notes 1952 saw 240 491 acres burned in Illinois with 954 fires started by debris burners and 216 by careless smokers. 1951 had 287 fires over 9 731 acres. The AFPS report cites dry season and warns total U S forest fires rose nationwide 30 percent in area and 15 percent in number.

Vacation trip through Pacific Northwest by Miss Corbett

Miss Mabel Corbett with her sister in law Mrs J L Corbett of Pekin left Sunday for a fifteen day vacation through the Pacific Northwest. They will travel by Pullman to Seattle then cruise Padget Sound to Victoria B C and Vancouver. The Canadian Rockies and Lake Louise will be explored on the return trip.

Dr Apathy Withdraws From Manito Practice Plans

Dr S Apathy will not open a medical practice in Manito after moving his family to Bradford Illinois. He arrived with strong recommendations from Delaware County Hospital Pennsylvania where he served as resident physician and chief of residents. He chose Bradford over Manila due to acceptable conditions.

Ennis Crafton Underwent Leg Operation Again

Ennis Crafton 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Crafton of Manito recently had a second leg operation at St. Francis hospital Peoria. The transfer of a stomach muscle replaced a leg muscle as part of hopes for normal walking. He remains in a cast from waist to toes and will stay two to three months. He is in room 852 and welcomes letters from friends.

Baptised Sunday for Renee James in Baldwin L.N.Y area

Renee infant daughter of Arc and Mrs Harold James of Baldwin L.N.Y. was baptised Sunday July 26 at St Pauls Lutheran Church near Manito. A dinner followed at the country home of her paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Emmet James with guests including Renee’s parents and the Woodleys.

Fire damages Manito plant in nighttime blaze

A Manito plant was plunged into darkness at 12 45 a.m. when firemen shut off power after mistaking the circuit for factory lines. Damage is expected in the thousands of dollars. It is the second major fire at the plant in recent years. The Manito fire department is commended for rapid control despite difficulties.

Miss Etta Cox of Peoria who spent time at Methodist Hospital was honored with a birthday party by her three doctors and hospital staff on Saturday July 25. Mr and Mrs C J DeSutter visited Sunday bearing flowers cookies and a cake from Christina Johnson along with numerous cards.
