Water Down at Parkland Today

Flood waters from the Mackinaw river covered Parkland farm lands several feet deep, then dropped about two feet by noon. Crews sandbagged the levee to curb seepage while farmers and railroaders watched for renewed danger near the C and I M road bed near the tracks. Ladies of Parkland supplied coffee and food to the vigilants during Wednesday’s watch.

Springfield Municipal Opera to Stage Irene Opener July 18

The Springfield Municipal Opera opens Irene on July 18 at 8 30 p m at Lake Springfield outdoor theatre with Jean C Hale Springfield in the title role and Dick Puffer Barrington in the male lead. Tickets priced 2 00 1 50 and 1 00 are sold by mail from 230 South Sixth Street Springfield with bus service from Fifth and Monroe Streets and free parking at the lakeside site.

William F Hirst Returns After Threat Operation

William F Hirst has returned from Chicago where he underwent a second threat operation in Billings hospital. He will be unable to use his voice for 10 days. A check up is scheduled for July 16 at the hospital.

Manito Defeats Glasford Sun In Baseball Match

The Manito ball team beat Glasford 7 to 3 Sunday at the Glasford American Legion park. Manito scored early with a first inning run and added five more in the second. Glasford responded with two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh. Manito finished with a final run in the seventh.

Local Boys Place In F F A Judging Contest

Manito F F A members medaled at the June 19 judging contest at the University of Illinois. Marvin Quick and Duane Golden earned red livestock ribbons, Frank Golden white, spurring a second place team finish. Charles Bilyeu and Ronald Meyer won white poultry ribbons for a third place, while Fred Heyl and James Meyersoth won blue ribbons and Norman Bilyeu a red in grain for a first place team finish. Plans include an F F A fair at Lewistown on July 30 and an F F A camp at Epworth Campgrounds August 22 to 24.

Mr and Mrs Harold Hirst are the proud parents of a baby girl born Tuesday July 10 in Pekin hospital. The child weighs 7 pounds 7 ounces and is named Ruth Alice. Grandparents are Arvil Van Netten Pekin and Loma Van Lanningham Manila. This is the couple’s second child and they have an older brother Randy.
