Manito Implement Dealer In Weekend Jeep Collision

Lester Bernshausen, a well known Manito implement dealer, was seriously injured when his jeep hit a car driven by William Rakestraw near the Methodist church. He was rushed to Pekin Public Hospital then transferred to Peoria hospitals due to limited room. X rays today reported him in good condition. Rakestraw suffered only minor bruises as both vehicles sustained heavy damage.

Mrs J E Bradman entertained with a food shower Friday evening in honor of Mrs John Liescheidt a recent bride and commercial teacher at M C H S Co hostess Mrs Patchett could not attend Prizes were awarded to Miss Loma Alice Golden and Mesdames Verle Carrel and Fred Barr Attendees included Mrs J E Bradman and many named guests plus gifts sent by Wanda Lowry Wanda Thompson Greta Beebe and Betty Abbott yards from the text.

Mission Sunday At Manito Methodist Church

D J Powell leads the Manito Methodist Church with a Missionary Sunday focus on improved attendance and community evangelism. Morning worship at 10 45 a m features a sermon on The Bible and Evangelism and a choir, followed by evening worship at 7 00 p m. Mid week Study and Prayer at 7 00 p m invites all, highlighting communal church work.

Obituary for Mrs. Margaret Halpin 74 life long resident of Manita

Mrs. Margaret Halpin 74 wife of John Halpin and life long resident of Manita died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday January 11 1950 in Peoria. She leaves her husband a son Chester Pekin three grandchildren and three sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev Joseph Hobbs officiating. Music by Verne Ethell and Ralph Ethell with Alpha Ethell as pianist. Pallbearers were Rudolph Robills Glen Tuckman Sr Ernest Cooper Walter Smith Jake Graff and Donald Parkin. Burial in Meadow Lawn Cemetery.

Star Routes Begin Carrying Mail Wednesday

On Wednesday January 17 the southbound morning and northbound afternoon trains between Springfield and Pekin ceased operation by the C. and I. M. A new Pekin to Havana star route carrier, Oscar Finson, started yesterday, with bids awarded by Pekin Postmaster Roy Preston. A Havana to Springfield route was filled by a Bath resident. Mail to Chicago is now dispatched four times daily on each run.

The annual Salvation Army drive is now in Manito and Forest City with local service units. Funds stay locally to aid emergencies such as a burned family in Manito last year. Manito committee is Amos D. Thompson chair and Mrs Paul Neikirk member. R. L. Mahr treasurer. Forest City committee led by Miss Gladys M. Langston chair. C. R. Skinner treasurer. other members Mrs Vera Hermann and Mrs R. G. Casey. Appeals will be mailed to rural route families clubs and church groups. Drive ends with tag days to be announced locally.

Ben Rapp Observes 90th Birthday at Tremont Nursing Home

Benjamin Rapp of San Jose vicinity, now at Tazewell Nursing Home near Tremont, turned 90 on January 15 1950. His son-in law Warren Neikirk daughter and grandson Marvin Neikirk with wives and children Nanciana Mare and granddaughter Mrs Thomas Martin visited Sunday afternoon for four generations of celebration.

Car Hits Freight Train at Mason Street Crossing

A car driven by Reuben Hoerr was demolished after a Mason street crossing collision with a C&IM freight train in Manita. The driver and a trainman were shaken. no major injuries reported. It was the second wreck on Mason Street in four days, following the Rakestraw Bernshausen collision nearby.

Freshman outing to Pekin includes skating and bowling

The freshman class traveled from Manito to Pekin on Friday January 13 for an evening of skating at Blue Island and bowling. Drivers included Mrs Della O Hara Mrs George Heyl Hank Fischer Mr Crane and Mr Patchett. They returned to Manila around 10 30 after enjoying both activities. James Seelye attended John Deere Co dealer conference in Moline Friday and Saturday.

Duck Hunting Best in Rice Lake Area

State conservation officials report strong support for a public hunting fee with more than 95 percent of the 20 000 Illinois hunters using public grounds yielding a daily harvest of about 1.5 ducks per hunter. Rice Lake in Fulton county led with 2058 ducks killed.

Manito man Harold Selke seeks Mason county clerk nomination

Harold Selke, 27, lifelong Manito resident and World War II veteran, announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for Mason county clerk. He served two years, was a machinist’s mate on the U S S Pride during Sicily to Italy operations, wounded by a shell. He is a DAV, American Legion, Havana Amvel Post member and belongs to Masonic and Eastern Star chapters. He is married to Dixie R. Hill and they once owned then sold the Orville Tunis grocery and market in Manito.

A meeting January 10 at Forest City Town Hall organized Hav ana Post 128 auxiliary with Mrs. Mary Moats as president and Mrs. Mary Earhart as vice president. Illinois oil booms with 2729 wells in 1949

Illinois fields completed 2729 oil and gas wells in 1949 the busiest year since 1941. December led with 299 completions and the Panama pool discovery in Montgomery county brought 24 pools for the year. Oil production in December reached 5.482 million barrels, up slightly from November. Local note: Clyde Priddy hosted a birthday dinner for Mrs. Howard Boyd with several relatives attending.
