Eugene Buck, a five year employee of the Manito Hardware Company, resigned his position effective December 31 and has taken new duties with the Standard Oil Company in the local area.
The Spring Lake Sunday school adult classes hosted a watch party at Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith home on New Year’s Eve. The program featured duets, a quartet, solo, poems, scripture, and a Burdette family contribution, followed by cake and coffee.
The Manito Township board at their Friday meeting December 28 appointed Louis Coombs as road commissioner to complete the unexpired term of Chas Hill.
Royal Neighbors of America Oak Leaf Camp No 4 held its January meeting and installed officers at Mrs Arley Schenert home. Officers included Oracle Edna Maloney Vice Oracle J A Seelye Receiver Helen Hoffman Recorded Madelyn Gill Chancellor Dottie Marshall Marsall Emma Hall Inner Sentinel Lillie Schenert Outer Sentinel Kathryn Hamilton Manager Alice Meyer Manager two year Lillie Schenert Chairman Kathryn Hamilton Social hour featured pinochle and banco with winners Helen Hoffman and Janice Meyer. Lunch followed at the Schenert dining room.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Palmer were Sunday evening supper guests of Mrs Eva Wilson, sharing a quiet social visit at her home.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Callaway of Forest City announce the engagement of their oldest daughter Jean to Eugene Bale son of Mr and Mrs Linzy Bale of Easton No definite wedding date has been set Jean Callaway is a Forest City High School junior Eugene Bale graduated from Easton Community High School in 1949 and works at Rickett Grain and Feed Co Forest City
Mrs William Meyer fell on ice at her home while carrying hot water and burned her hip and leg. She was taken to Pekin hospital with third degree burns and faces at least ten days more of care. Her brother Henry Albrecht died in Arkansas. several Meyer family members traveled to Eureka Springs for funeral services.
Bob Taylor, a Notre Dame student and former Pekin football player, visited the Dr. J. W. Cooper residence for several days last week while remaining a member of the Notre Dame squad.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Meyer thank relatives friends and neighbors for ecards best wishes calls and gifts that made their 25th wedding anniversary on December 29 a very pleasant occasion.
Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gore hosted relatives for Christmas Day noon dinner. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Grover Nixon and Thomas May of Oak Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Gore and son Stephen of Galesburg. Thomas May, 85, is Mrs. Gore's sole living relative, and Glen's last Christmas before returning to service.
Rev. D. J. Powell of Manito Methodist Church spent Monday in Peoria for the Peoria District Camping Commission planning meeting. The gathering outlined plans for upcoming youth camps this summer with details to be posted on church bulletin boards soon.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Hamilton hosted relatives for a 6:30 dinner to honor their older son Pvt. Billy Hamilton on Christmas leave from December 22. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson Mackinaw and other local families. Billy departed New Year’s for his base at Fort Riley Kansas with Pvt. Lyle Ingersoll who also had a holiday furlough.
A belated birthday gathering was held Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hyde to honor Mrs. Hattie Seelye whose birthday was December 23. Guests included Mrs Iva Clarke Miss Nora Ryan and the hosts.
Mr and Mrs Harold Selke of Peoria visited the former s parents Mr and Mrs Harry Selke on Sunday, sharing a family moment in the local community.
Mr and Mrs Carl Schmidtgall announce the birth of an eight pound baby boy Wednesday morning at Pekin hospital January 2 The child was named Stephen Eric The mother is Wanda Thompson The maternal grandparents are Amos and Mrs Thompson The paternal grandparents are Carl Schmidtgall Sr and Mrs Schmidtgall The baby arrived a day late for the father's birthday and a day early for the parents wedding anniversary.
Miss Mary Alice Cooper a junior at Arkansas Polytechnic College Russellville Ark enjoyed a twelve day vacation with her parents and sister family the John Urishes Jr of Green Valley. She celebrated her 20th birthday on December 21 with a family dinner at the Urish home near Green Valley. Christmas breakfast and gift exchange followed at the Cooper home with guests Mr and Mrs Urish Rebecca Jane and John Cooper. A pre New Year dinner was held at the Cooper home before Mary Alice returned to college duties Wednesday with her parents accompanying her as far as Jacksonville.
Navy Hospitalman 3rd Class Charles Mears, wife Genivieve of Los Angeles, arrives in San Diego aboard USS Whetstone. He is headed to Manila on discharge in February after serving in Korea with Task Force 95. The Whetstone earned the Korean Presidential Citation for meritorious service.
Mr and Mrs George Grob visited with Carl Fischer in Green Valley on Sunday.
Two strangers entered the Jenkins Jewelry and Gift Shop Monday afternoon under the pretext of buying salve and stole two cameras. As the owner wrapped merchandise, the other suspect browsed and lifted a movie camera and a 35 mm camera. Jenkins chased them but lost the pair when his car radiator was damaged, allowing the thieves to escape.

Mrs Harold Meyer and her son Michael arrived from Burbank California to visit her mother Mrs Elizabeth Parkin and the home of Mr and Mrs Harry Meyer. Larry Parkin had already arrived from Longview Texas completing the family gathering for New Year at the Parkin home.
Mrs. Kate Hilst is recovering from a recent fall and cannot yet walk on the injured leg. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hilst were in Peoria last Thursday to visit Mrs. Hilst at the Wright home. The Hilst family includes sons George Wesley Bill of Manito, Fred in California, Ralph in Beloit, August, and daughters Mrs. Ernest Rose and Mrs. Norval Wright of Peoria.
