William R. Nelson argues that a local paper is more than a business. It serves as a mirror of the community a clearing house for ideas a library of local information a market place and a watchdog while also acting as a manufacturing plant for printed matter.
The Forest City High School Gym was filled Friday as seniors presented the three act comedy Don't Blame Me. Mrs Ferne Lawlis directed the production to acclaim with Miss Jean Eyman presenting roses to the director as the program featured piano duets and vocal numbers by Glenda Kennedy Loretta Dierker and Delta Lou Beale.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Look hosted a Sunday birthday dinner for Janet Lou and Berry Allen their sixth. Cakes were decorated by grandmothers Mrs Carl Look and Mrs Clarence Farman. Attendants included Mr and Mrs Carl Look daughter Pekin Mr and Mrs Clarence Farman Mr and Mrs Bob Farnam and son Randy and Mr and Mrs Kenneth Look and family.
A food sale is announced to be sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary of Manila with details to be announced later.

The Manito Mother's Club hosted a Friday evening supper at the Grade School auditorium for the Grade School basketball team and their cheerleaders. Norman Crane and Betty Lou Meyer sang, Rev Powell spoke, and movies were shown with attendance listed including local families and parents.
Mrs. Orrin Zimmerman entertained the pinochle club Tuesday evening at her home. Co hosts were Mrs. Betty Hilst Miss Betty Ary and Mrs. Evelyn Timbrook. Lunch was served to mesdames Katherine Marshall Betty Hilst Evelyn Timbrook Pat White Marion Zimmerman Mary Rose Reynolds Sara Hammers and Miss Betty Ary. Prizes were awarded to Pat White and Marion Zimmerman.
The Forest City Township completed its annual American Red Cross membership drive. Contributions totaled $186.75 with Forest City School District 66 raising $79.75 and rural districts contributing $107. Solicitors praised for deligntful work and residents for cooperation.
The food sale sponsored by the Woman's Society of Christian Service raised $69.44 so far. organizers expect the remaining donations will push the total to the $100 goal.
Mrs W L Kerr hosted a birthday dinner for her husband on Monday noon with Mrs Christine Johnson Charles Arvin and the couple Mr and Mrs W L Kerr in attendance.
Manito Community High School remains on the North Central Association approved list after a March 30 letter to Principal John J. Rush. The school has been a member since 1925 and was praised as unqualifiedly approved at the Chicago annual meeting.
Springlake Church holds Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. Morning Worship at 10:45 a.m. Evangelistic Service at 7:30 p.m. St Pauls Lutheran Church led by Pastor O A Borchelt offers Good Friday service at 8:00 p.m. Easter Sunday Sunday School at 9:15 a.m. and Easter Services at 10:15 a.m.
On Friday April 7 1950 Good Friday services were held at the Manito Church. The church will host Sunday morning worship on April 9 at 10 o clock led by Pastor Joseph Hobbs followed by Sunday School at 11 o clock with Superintendent Lawrence Whitford.

The Federated Church schedules a 6:00 a.m. sunrise service for youth at the Methodist Church with breakfast in the Baptist basement. At 10:00 a.m. Sunday School is led by Byron Kreiling, followed by an 11:15 a.m. Easter Worship led by Pastor Joseph W. Hobbs during which infants may be presented for baptism or dedication and members will be received.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Look entertained with a fish supper at their home last Wednesday. Attending were Mr. Arthur Bentz of South Pekin, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schmid and children, and the Look family.
Mrs. Robert Cranwill attended the Pekin funeral Saturday for her brother Leonard D. McKay. He is survived by his wife and daughter Irene plus three sisters and one brother. Survivors include Dorothy Errion Milwaukee, Margaret Van Tine Peoria, Mrs. Robert Cranwill Manito, and Pete McKay South Bend Indiana.
The Forest City Federated Church presents The Song Of Triumph Easter Cantata at 8:00 P.M. under director Dillard Warner. Choir rehearsals are at the Methodist Church on Thursday and Saturday evenings, April 6 and April 8, with full attendance expected.
Miss Mary Alice Cooper, a fresh man at Arkansas Polytechnic College Russellville, writes her parents that she will spend the five day Easter vacation with classmate Miss Ann Lee Ewing in Scranton Arkansas. She enjoys life at the Southern college and will finish her freshman year by early June before returning to Manito for summer break.
Dr and Mrs J W Cooper hosted a birthday dinner Sunday for their elder daughter Bonnie Jayne Urish whose anniversary is March 29. Guests were John Urish Jr Rebecca Jane John Cooper and the couple with Minnie Coombs baking one cake. A congratulatory letter from Mary Alice was read.
Clara Waldon born October 19 1878 in Dillon Township Tazewell County died April 2 1950 at her Manito home. She married Henry Waechter in 1898 and later John Walden in 1910. She lived in Tremont and Manito, mother to Herman Darrell Beulah Hazel and later grandchildren and great grandchild. She was active in Methodist circles and eastern stars. Funeral held April 2 1950 at Manito Community Methodist Church with Rev D J Powell. burial Lakeside Cemetery.
Forest City residents gathered Monday evening at Forest City High School to hear about a petition for forming a Unit school district. W C Langston led the meeting with Roy White presenting costs of current operations and estimated cost of the proposed unit system, with reps from San Jose Easton and Forest City Township in attendance.
Palm Sunday observance featured 11 infants and several youths baptized by Pastor D. J. Powell with choir support. Names of baptized children and adults receiving by letter or confession of faith are listed amid a large, reverent service.
The Rogers School District 118 held a community meeting Friday evening March 31. Pupils presented a musical program followed by games of canasta and poker. Lunch was served by Mrs. Henry Waldmeier, Mrs. Ivan Hirst, and Mrs. Robert Hilst.

James Meyer of Manito chapter earns second place and silver medal in the FFA public speaking contest held at Pekin High School. V.L.T. wins first. Pekin and Deer Creek Mackinaw tie for third. Alaska farming and corn borer control are among speeches.
The Women’s Society of Christian Service met at the church on March 30. Mrs. Theodore Bender led planning for a group of youths. new officers were elected including President Jessie Ethell and several secretaries and treasurer Orlena Rush.
The American Legion Auxiliary of Manila met in the Legion rooms Monday evening with sixteen members present. Committees were appointed including membership with Dixie Selke, Matilda Bernshausen, and Bertha Thomas. Poppy and food sale committees were named and next month’s refreshment group listed.
Manito Home Bureau will hold its regular meeting Thursday April 13 at the home of Mrs Leona Kastner. The Minor lesson will be Annual Garden Flowers. The Major lesson will be the Urinary System given by the Home adviser. Roll call will be answered with Things I Like To Freeze.
U S D A reports a sharp rise in livestock slaughter in the western states from 1926 to 1948 more than doubling the 1926 total. The data reflect nationwide livestock trends and help gauge agricultural output and market conditions.
Janet Lempke and Eldon Wahlfeld elected to the honorary All American Boy and Girl of the graduating class. They are high ranking students and favorites for their cheerfulness. They receive Legion medals, first from Forest City Post at Commencement. Janet is Louis Lempke’s daughter and Eldon is Henry Wahlfeld’s son.
April birthdays include Edna Mae Himmel on the 9th Harold and Howard Stout on the 9th Mrs Clarence Gumble on the 10th Mrs Bessie Willard Tex Sunderland Anna Gripp on the 11th Nora Halpin on the 14th and Mrs Lester Bernshausen on the 14th.
Mason County Illinois officials announce a petition to form a community unit school district merging Manito No. 503 and Forest City No. 5600. A hearing with Joseph W. Hobbs, County Superintendent, will be held April 28, 1950, at Forest City Town Hall to review sufficiency and contiguity of the proposed territory.
