Rural School's Athletic Carnival sparks strong youth events
The rural school's carnival featured ideal weather and keen competition. Coral Kingdom led in senior girls and Namoi Peel and Peel won primary divisions while Oxley house claimed the top super primary score. Jim Elliott and Coral Kingdoms highlighted multiple age groups with records broken and trophy cups awarded by Mrs. Dean.

Park Land Purchase For Southbrook Park
A special Southbrook Settlers Association meeting decided to buy a one acre block at the corner of Stoddart and Victor streets for a central park. An alternative 2 acre option on South and Manilla streets, part of an old golf course, was noted but declined. Funds will be raised by a series of events, the next on October 8, with donations welcomed via Mr Ken May at the Express office.

Manilla Cemetery Roads To Be Graded And Sealed
The Cemetery Improvements Committee approved early 1953 plans to grade form and tar seal the central and inner roadways of Manilla cemetery to improve facilities at minimal cost. Work is to be completed by the end of October 1953. Also noted a mass arrest in Nelson Br Col where about 150 adults protested compulsory schooling with a nudist parade.
