Migrant Farm Labor Discussed By Manilla Graziers Branch
The Manilla Branch of the Graziers Assoc of New South Wales met at the Mecnanica Institute on Friday with President B. V. Byrnes in the chair. A circular noted that Italians Dutch and West German migrants would arrive in Australia early 1952 for rural work and branches were asked to give views. Questions included whether migrants should be paid award rates if lacking rural experience and whether prejudices against Italians Dutch or Germans exist. Attendees voiced no strong prejudice, some preferring Germans as better rural workers, while others cited Italy's high agricultural standard. Concerns were raised about high taxation limiting migrant labour and housing for married men with children.
