Jubilee Essays Competition How Australians Became One People
A historical survey traces Australian discovery from Dirk Hartog to Captain Cook and Botany Bay, leading to federation in 1901. It highlights early exploration, convict settlement, and the drive for self government, with figures like Phillip, Parkes, Reid, Wentworth, and the growth of states and parliamentary power. The piece closes with national identity as one destiny under federation.

Myxomatosis drive expands with 456 rabbits inoculated
The Department of Agriculture advanced its large scale anti rabbit campaign with 456 rabbits from 36 holdings in the Manilla district inoculated at Manilla Sale Yards on Friday morning. W B Harding supervised the inoculations for the Tamworth Pest Control Board. Rabbits arrived in wheat bags and cages, inoculation involved clipping a square inch of fur for injection, and the animals will be held about seven days before return to their localities. Few landholders prosecuted for failing to destroy rabbits joined the program, as inoculation was free. Further inoculations may occur in about four weeks.

Stock Routes Debate at Manilla Graziers Meeting
At the Manilla Graziers Association branch meeting Mr B V Byrnes moved to urge the NSW Agriculture Minister to cut stock route widths from 20 chains to 5 or 10. W D Byrnes argued large routes waste land as motor trucks replace road transport. Mungo Park supported keeping large routes, warning once given up they may not be returned.
