Three Commission Homes Allotted In Rowan Street Row
The housing commission of N S W allotted three cottages in Rowan street in the Railway paddock as the first of 13 proposed. J P Geaghan & Son of Barraba built the three bed two, and two three bedroom homes. Eight applicants entered a three draw ballot with scrutineers present. Cecil Cooper won a three bedroom ex servicemen cottage, Ralph Flett won the next three bedroom cottage, and N J Billsborough won the two bedroom cottage. A waiting list exists for vacancies with priority order. Occupation is expected in about ten days. Further two cottages in Rowan street have begun and a ballot will be held by year end. The local Tenancy Committee includes the Mayor and others from RSL and CWA. The P and O Ladies Auxiliary thanked helpers for street stall successes and prize winners were announced by G F B Grill and R Shineberg.

Showground Reorganization Plan Deliberated by Manilla Society
At a Show Committee meeting of the Manilla Agricultural Society the executive was asked to call a subcommittee to adopt an overall plan for reorganising the Showground. A special committee comprising the executive finance committee and chief stewards will be formed to oversee the plan. The Municipal Council declined to close part of River street, necessitating ground reorganisation and extension to the south with removal of buildings. A long range plan includes levelling, road surveys for access, defined parking, signage, and fencing decisions for the southern end.

Manilla Show Committee Meeting Notes 1954
The Manilla Agricultural Society Show Committee met at the Mechanics Institute with 15 members, chaired by Mr. B. V. Byrnes. They lamented the passing of patron J. D. Kennedy and discussed council refusal to close River streets for the show, draft showground agreements, catering by Parker Bros of Inverell, stall access permissions, new committee elections, plans for a Federal science station at Manilla, fence repairs, ambulance gate relocation, water drainage on the trotting track, and broadcasting gate construction.

Manilla Court sentences two defendants for theft
Laurence L. Carter of Manilla was jailed for two months with hard labour after pleading guilty to stealing eight sheets of iron from Mr John Nixon’s hut at Oakhampton. T Roberts was fined on the same charge. Sgt Lucas stated Carter had four previous theft convictions and a prior charge of malehorsey. Roberts claimed the iron was for a shed on the same property.
