The Halls Creek Progress Association submitted demands at the last Mondona Shire meeting. They seek pipe culverts under the causeway, demolition of a nearby causeway near Glenbarra Dunmore road, and two detailed cost statements for proposed new roads. The council advised against piping and demolition, noting costs and time for itemised cost statements.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge required over 600 tons of paint for its first three coats and a single coat takes five years to complete, using about 7,000 gallons.
A Coronation Celebrations Committee was formed at a public meeting in the Council Chambers on Tuesday night to organise a procession and sports afternoon at the Showground on June 2. The event marks Queen Elizabeth II's coronation with plans for services, a public holiday and school competitions under sub committees for sport and procession.
Reverend Hugh McDonald, secretary of Foreign Missions, travels to Manilla on Sunday. At 7:30 pm in St Andrews Presbyterian Church he will conduct the evening service and present the color sound film Man Darkness No More about life in the New Hebrides.
Brian Lane of Upper Manilla was fined £5 by Mr J B Hodgson SM in Manilla Court of Petty Sessions for riding a motorcycle without proper control. Police testified that on December 21 at 12:15 pm he lifted both hands from the handlebars and rode about five yards then repeated the act for 15 hands before being stopped. He admitted the behavior and was warned his licence could be taken if repeated.
At Manilla Court of Pelly Session judge Mr J B Hodgson fined two men £2 10s each for using a net on the Namoi River in contravention of a May 3 1950 proclamation prohibiting fishing by methods other than single rod and line or hand line with no more than two hooks. Defendants Arthur W Pacey and George J Taylor claimed the net was 44 inch mesh and imply it was ordered. Constable Stanford testified seeing a net across the river and the men claiming no harm. A Wood's Garage demonstration notice followed.
Retail trade in Austimilia rose by £22 million in the December quarter, in contrast to the previous quarter. Analysts cited stronger consumer demand and a rebound in domestic spending as drivers of the year end uptick.
