At the monthly Manilla Business Mews Association meeting the Agricultural Society of Manilla sought a half holiday on March 21 and 22. The association chose to close premises at 12 noon on both days and proclaimed a bank holiday for March 22. Easter closings will mirror last year with Good Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Easter Monday observed.
The Liverpool Plains District Council met at Gunnedah with delegates reporting on taxation rates and calls for policy changes to aid primary production. A 40 percent reduction in Provisional Tax on incomes for year ending June 30, 1951 was urged, along with closer settlement to curb urban drift and full petrol tax allocated to road construction, 25 percent to Shire Councils. The rails and stores movement, faster trains, and stock unloading measures were pressed, and the Australian Wheat Growers Federation backed Wheat Board resistance to freight payments from wheat funds.
At a Manilla meeting the Business Mens Association resolved to write to the Municipal Council urging a rate reduction in light of the Valuer General's higher valuations. A member cited a home rate jump from £11 in 1949 to £32 this year, arguing current rates exceed general pay capacity. The group also pressed for a wheat price floor of not less than 16/1 per bushel for the coming season and discussed harvest storage and handling improvements.
