Income came from Manilla Rotary £760, street stall £107 5 3, donations £81 6 9, Xmas tree £72 3 0, boxes £112 8 2, plus staff contributions totalling £149 10 1. End balance £139 3 2. Officers re-elected: President W J Byrnes, Vice Presidents A G Cameron and W R Grantham, Treasurer L Campbell, Secretary J Haining. New members welcomed: Mrs C Johnson, Miss D Crosby, Mr J O Moore. The Caledonian Society notes recent purchases for the Band funded by donations and society funds. Equipment totals include bagpipes, drums, belts, kilts, and related items, with a total equipment outlay of £976 14s 10d and year’s purchases to 30 June 1953 valued at £2181 9d. Donations are asked to complete remaining items such as sixteen finucs and shoulder brooches.

Police prosecutor Lucas stated that at about 4 pm on March 28 the defendant drove a motor vehicle along Manilla Street and made a U turn into the path of a northbound vehicle, causing a collision. The defendant claimed he thought the other car would stop and that no other vehicle was in sight. He had no previous convictions.
Town Clerk Mr R A Browne announced that Tar Paving No 2 will commence within two weeks weather permitting. The original 1953 plan covered Arthur Street Straford Market and Rowan paths with tar paving and will extend to Strafford Street Arthur Hill with two 12 inch strips. The Church of England Parochial Council had urged the work. council replied that the section would be in a future programme. Total cost this year is about £2000 and aims to finish within two months.

Previously convicted in early 1951 and given bond for two years. Lawyer argued hardship due to supporting a widowed mother. Justice imposed fine of 30 pounds and automatic 22 month license suspension.
The first full length Technicolour film A Queen Is Crowned will be shown at the Palais Theatre on August 4, 5, and 6 with a special children's matinee Tuesday morning. The film depicts the coronation in intricate detail and features an Olivier narrated script by Christopher Fry, with Malcolm Sargent as musical adviser and conductor and music by Guy Warrack.
