Ugly Man Crown At Church Ball In Memorial Hall

The annual Church of England Ball in Memorial Hall drew 550 to 600 patrons and crowned Ken Paterson Ugly Man champion. Paterson won with 10 983 votes and raised 274 11 6, edging Ken White who gathered 10 706 votes and 267 13 0. Rex Wood placed third with 7 774 votes and 194 7 0. The event total raised was 736 11 6. Belle of the Ball was Miss Roberta Price. Proceeds support the Ball and committee efforts. Mayor Ald G F Grill opened and crowned Paterson.

Cow Attacks Man in Swanbrook Run-In

On Saturday afternoon Stan Kell of Swanbrook narrowly escaped serious injury when a cow he was rounding up charged him. He lay face down as the animal charged, ripping his coat and sweat from his clothing before Kell booted it on the nose, sending the beast away.

Manilla court fines Sly for unauthorised repairs delay

William Henry Sly of Manilla was fined seven pounds with thirteen shillings and fourpence costs for failing to carry out a court order to repair a house in Court Street. In January 1952 Mr J B Hodgson ordered repairs to a verandah after the municipal inspector deemed it unsafe. The court gave six weeks to complete the work, but Sly sought more time in multiple appearances before the final hearing. Municipal Council represented by M D Leyden.

Tamworth Driver Fined for Negligent Driving

Marcus Edward Fisher of Tamworth was fined £2 180d and costs on a negligent driving charge. He admitted driving a motor lorry that night, colliding with a utility truck owned by Mr D A Boyton of Premey, parked on Manilla Street. Police said there was little sign of impact when his vehicle was inspected.

Two Held For Indecent Language Offenses

Two persons faced court on indecent language charges. Lyntall Robert Sneesby was fined £3 10s for shouting obscenities in his yard near Market Street and brandishing a crowbar when spoken to by police. Nancy Phyllis Clark received a £1 fine for indecent language and insulting words.

Failed to Return Number Plates for Expired Tractor Registration

Mrs Margaret E Carey was fined 1 pound with 12 costs for failing to veto number plates on an expired tractor registration. Police said the tractor’s registration expired on January 3 but plates were not handed to the Manila Motor Registry Office until June 5, 1953.

Narrabri Cup Victory At Narrabri Races

Pembroke the brown gelding by Tuhipatata from Fossil won the Narrabri Cup over seven furlongs, equalling the course time. Old Kywarra, nine, captured the Welter Handicap in a nose photo. Postage Stamp Booklets On Sale From July 1

Postage stamp booklets containing twelve 3d stamps will be on sale at post offices at 3 shillings 6d each from today July 1. The Postmaster General Mr Anthony said prewar booklets were very popular with about five million copies sold yearly. Wartime production declined due to staff and paper shortages but Commonwealth Note Printer has installed special machinery to facilitate future production and prevent shortages.
