The Manilla RSL convened with President A A Duprez in the chair and welcomed new member A J Roberts. The Works Committee will repair Club Rooms with municipal paint supplied if labour is provided. a Shearers Cut Out Ball at Oakhampton was approved to raise funds for the Manilla District Hospital and RSL Building Fund. support for the Spastic Centre was urged with a collection box in the Club Rooms.
A station hand brought a wireless to a local repair shop saying the set was faulty. The repairman found all the valves blown. The customer quipped that the flies in the North and North West would blow anything, turning the mishap into a lighthearted joke.
The school entered two teams in Tamworth’s Combined Schools Football Carnival with a 3 all draw for the first team against West Tamworth, then falling to West Tamworth on points. Manilla players Berry, Martin, and Hayne starred. the 6 team lost to Quirindi 6 to fill. John Hayward and Golodwyn Jenner excelled in the Keller Cup build. Keller Cup action heads to Gunnedah next Saturday. The School Art Exhibition at Mechanics Institute drew over 100 patrons, raising more than £10 for art materials, with Inspector K Howard praising the work. The Manila Business News Association also showcased the children’s works.
Work on tar paving under the Municipal Council’s plan began last Monday. Crews are stalling larger concrete culverts on Court Street near the Hospital, then scarifying and grading once weather warms. Streets to be paved include Court Street to Arthur Street, Arthur Street between Court and Strafford, and Strafford Street to Manilla Street. Aggregate delivery started last week, expected end next week. Grading on Arthur and Charles Streets North Manilla will begin soon, funded by Petrol Tax allocations.
The C. of E. Fellowship held a Monday meeting debating whether Aborigines should have full civil rights and responsibilities. Miss Dot Crosby acted as adjudicator, with appreciation for her insights. Members are urged to apply her advice to future speeches. Bingara trip provided hospitality and social events. A table tennis tournament boosted funds, with Marge Cooke and Gerald Smith donating winnings back. A working bee tidied the homes of Miss Algie and Miss Rudd, reflecting esteem for long time church workers hindered by illness.
At the August Mothers Club meeting two competitions tied to the recent Doll Show were decided. Mrs Adams donated a set of baby clothes won by Mrs J B Gilroy of Manilla. A Gollywog by Mrs Loch was claimed by Miss Peta Rush.

Namor Shire Council President E K Vickery announced a regional conference with the New South Wales Bush Fire Committee. It will be held in Narrabri Town Hall on Friday September 12 at 10.30 am, with opening hoped by Chief Secretary C A Kelly MLA. Delegations from multiple shires and bush fire brigades will attend to discuss the Bush Fires Act 1949 and fire prevention strategies.
A Breton fisherman near to sailing for the Newfoundland Banks was interviewed by a journalist. He recalled that two of his father’s relatives had perished at sea. When asked if he wasn’t afraid to sail out, he replied that fear comes from death at home, not from the sea, and that danger does not stop him from going to work each night.
