Patrick Vincent Sweeney 75 RSL member in Manilla district obit
Patrick Vincent Sweeney died August 2 at Manilla District Hospital after a short illness. Born Quitindi about 75 years ago he came to Manilla district as a young man, served as an original Anzac with the 15th Battalion AIF, and was invalided from Gallipoli to England before returning to Australia in 1917. He farmed near Upper Manilla, later grew tobacco, and in later years had no fixed occupation. An excellent judge of horses, he once owned trotters including Bullfighter. Burial was at Manilla cemetery after mass at St Michael's Church with Rev Father O'Brien presiding. Pallbearers were Manilla Sub Branch RSL members. He leaves two sisters, Mes dames A A Manning and D Logan of Sydney, and a brother James who died years ago. eldest sister Anne predeceased him. Requiem Mass was offered at St Patrick's Attunga, with funeral service by Rev Father John B McKeon and Rev Father S. O'Brien, and pallbearers included S Blair and P Ryan. Burial followed in Attunga cemetery with Rev Father McKeon officiating.

Denis McKeon, aged 61, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs M J McKeon of Balaclava Yarramanbully Attunga, died suddenly. He mated Miss Topsy Ryan in 1924 and leaves widow and eight children. He owned properties Balaclava Werrywin Brooklyn Fernville and supported horse racing tennis and foot-running. He leaves brother Joseph in Bathaba and sister Julia Blair of Waverley Ben.

Mrs Louisa Sharpe widow of J T Sharpe of Bell Bird died July 12 at Cessnock District Hospital aged 833 years. She leaves two daughters Myra Cook and Olive Sydney and son Robert at Cessnock. Surviving siblings are Fred Mitchell Manilla Arthur Mitchell Milfield Eliza Sharpe Bell Bird Lavinia Jackson Bell Bird Blanche Jones Bell Bird Mary Ling Ettalong Florence Chapman Halls Creek Grace Chapman Halls Creek. Burial was in the Church of England cemetery Millfield.

Soil Conservation Field Day at Red Hill Barraba
An afternoon field day on 24 July showcased soil conservation work by landholders and the Soil Conservation Service. Inspections highlighted contour absorption banks, graded banks, waterways, and silt traps reducing runoff and erosion. A 3000 cubic yard dam raises well levels, while Rhodes and Rye grasses bolster vegetation and winter feed on treated paddocks.

The Macleay Chronicle, in operation since 1878 and long a Kempsey news source, has been sold. Founded by Gabel and Scott and later owned by E. P. Noonan until 1949, it has been published by the Noonan family for decades. The Macleay Argus now buys the publishing right plant and machinery.
