Anzac Day Observance in Manilla

Anzac Day observance begins with a 5 30 dawn service at Memorial Hall. Wreaths may be placed Saturday evening. Ex service personnel assemble at 10 20 in Court Street for a 10 36 parade to Soldiers Memorial Hall, led by Manilla Pipe Band. A short address follows, then wreaths and tributes before a Piper plays the Scottish Lament. The service ends with Last Post and Reveille before proceedings to Palais Theatre and cemetery wreath laying. ANZAC Ball tonight at Memorial Hall features nine debutantes, two orchestras, poultry supper, and a blanket prize. Street stall permits granted for May and April events, and Tin Hat Day appeal approved.

Manilla CWA notes April meeting at Rest Rooms

The Manilla CWA held its last monthly meeting on Friday April 9 in the Rest Rooms with Mrs L Bowman presiding and Mrs I Miller acting secretary in Mrs Park’s absence. A resignation from Mrs W Bignall the Baby Health Centre treasurer was recorded and Mrs Wilkinson elected to fill the vacancy. The annual Ball is set for May 28 with sit down poultry suppers. Delegates include Mrs L Bowman Mrs R Hardcastle to the Name Group Council and Manilla War Memorial Park Fund council. Afternoon tea followed the Presbyterian Flower Show event. Delegates to the annual general conference are Mrs L Bowman and Mrs R Hardcastle.

Rotary Club Function Promotes Barbecue Dance May Day

Manilla Rotary Club hosts a dance barbecue and camp fire at the recreation ground on Saturday May 1 with a 6 pm Scout procession, camp fire 6:30 to 7:30 pm, barbecue 6:30 to 10 pm, dancing 6 pm to midnight. Admission 2d, cars inside free. proceeds aid Manilla Boy Scouts. Includes public statements from local clergy and editors.

Namoi River Bridge repair call to main roads dept

At Tuesday night’s municipal council meeting Health and Building Inspector H Roberts reported the Namoi River bridge footway needs considerable repair. Council will refer the report to the Department of Main Roads and ask for footway widening and lighting extension.

Locals to Broadcast on ABC Regional Station 2M

Three Manilla people will broadcast on the ABC Regional Station 2M in a programme called New England and Northern Magazine heard every second Thursday at 6 30 pm. Miss Dawn Flett will be interviewed on the program tonight Thursday. On Thursday May 6 G C L Wilshire and C V Veness will take part in the programme.

Easter Service Lecture At Memorial Hall

Mr 5 B Trim presented a Easter Service at Memorial Hall last Sunday night with colour pictures of Christ life scenes from birth to ascension. Congregational hymns were sung and projected, and free booklets featuring a portrait of Christ were given to attendees. No lecture next Sunday due to another booking of the hall. 130 Non-Voters To Be Prosecuted

Minutes of the Municipal Council show after the 5 December 1953 Local Government election and a marked roll test, 130 electors in Manilla faced prosecution for failing to vote. Of 104 who answered, 55 gave valid reasons, 49 invalid, while 89 gave no reason at all, triggering penalties under section 74 F of the Local Government Act. Prosecution officers Messrs D. Hennedy and Sons have been appointed.

Anzac Day Holiday Proclaimed for Monday 26th

Anzac Day falls on Sunday this year so Monday 26th April is proclaimed a public holiday. Business houses close all day while garages open 9 am to 12 noon for front of shop service only. Garages closed entirely Sunday. Manilla Post Office open Monday 9 am to 10 am for money orders only. no deliveries on Monday. Newspaper to publish next Tuesday. advertisers to submit copy by Friday 1 pm.
