At the Manilla Rotary Club annual meeting on Monday night the officers for the coming year were elected. President D. E. B. Hunt. Vice Presidents J Coates and R A Browne. Secretary J Haining. Treasurer R G Williams. Sergeant at Arms L Johnston. Directors D H Kennedy and G N Stafford. Object for the year: Country Womens Association Manilla.
At a Farmers and Settlers Association meeting the group debated asking the Australian Wheat Board to let local licensed receivers use their own discretion in releasing wheat sacks. Current rules require farmers to pay local agents for bogs and sign a statement sent to Sydney for confirmation before delivery. For 1952/53 the Mosman Spastic Centre was the beneficiary, raising over £700.
At a Friday Farmers and Settlers Association meeting in New England the group urged D H E Drummond to protest to the Federal Government against using rural taxpayers’ funds for Television. They oppose subsidising city entertainment, noting country residents would not benefit for years, arguing revenue should fund hospitals, schools, and roads.
St Andrews Presbyterian Church Manilla hosted the wedding of Winnifred Johnston and Gardner Gardner with Rev A Mitchell officiating. The bride wore chantry lace with orange blossom accents, a long tier veil, and carried white satin and floral details, as guests watched from 100 attendees. The reception at Royal Hotel Manilla featured a three tier cream and gold cake, with gifts and telegrams from guests in Sydney and rural areas.
All Manilla business houses close at 5 30 pm today for a four day Easter break and reopen next Tuesday at 9 10 am. Butchers open Saturday morning, closed Friday and Monday. Garages closed Friday with Saturday hours. Sunday and Monday hours 9 am to noon. Post office Easter hours listed. mails close 11 am. private boxes may be collected Saturday and Monday. Over Easter events include church services, a Southbrook Settlers Association fair for a park and playground, Tamworth bowling tournament at Manilla greens, and Tamworth district rugby league matches with Manilla hosting Fast Tamworth.
Mr and Mrs Gardner spent their honeymoon touring the New England and North Coast districts. Their future home will be in Manila.
The P and C Association reports net proceeds from the monthly school fete of about £220. Held Friday, the event gains will fund an assembly hall, two classrooms, a staff room and library. Enrolment reaches 500 with hopes to extend radio, sewerage connections, and a new lawn mower funded in part by Mothers Club.
Framed tribute paid to Mr C OL Wilshire who was reelected Treasurer of the Manilla branch for his 44th consecutive term. He has long served as Secretary-Treasurer since 1909 and led local Graziers Association since 1917, while also acting as Hospital Secretary for 29 years. Easter Saturday events and a 1953 swimming pool proposal are noted, with upcoming school uniform discussions and a reading methods talk.
