Dozen Monster Leviathans Beach Themselves at Anclote River Mouth
Conductor Charles Lee recounts sighting seven large blackfish of the whale family stranded near Tarpon Springs at the mouth of the Anclote River. The creatures, each 15 to 20 feet long and weighing about 8,000 pounds, lay aligned on the shore as if placed, with six within 200 feet of the rest, and one about 300 feet away. No storm or unusual tide preceded the event, and locals planned to preserve the largest head and backbone for display in St. Petersburg.
