The annual Old Settlers meeting for Mills, Fremont, and Pottawattamie counties gathered in Malvern last Friday. Attendees enjoyed a full day of speeches, singing, a watermelon feast, and renewed memories of pioneer days.
The Soldiers' Books are packed and ready for shipment from Camp Kearny. 125 books and 475 magazines to be sent at a time, with more on the way. New books, a rent shelf addition, and a promised run of reading material for the boys. The story hour drew 33 children last Saturday as Miss Poland and Miss Shannon led readings. Paul Barnes, writing from Camp Kearny in Linda Vista, describes a vast cantonment growing to 66 000 men with extensive facilities, drill, and housing, as preparations continue for potential deployment to France.
A Ford driven by A T Hardy and his wife veered off a bridge embankment into a dry slough after dust and glare blinded the driver. Both occupants escaped with minor bruises, were helped by bystanders, and continued to St Joe before returning home Friday.
Mrs Minnie Hammons published a letter from her son Harry Hammons of Company I Fighting Third Iowa now 168th U S Infantry at Camp Mills Hempstead New York dated September 27. He reports feeling fine and that rain the day before dried up quickly. He mentions letters from Arva Burrus and J W Jones and that Burrus sent tobacco for distribution among the men. He notes a planned party for 1200 soldiers the next night but he could not attend due to incomplete army uniforms.
The dull season for retailers, mainly July and August, requires advertising to sustain business. Advertising creates sales and should be run year round, including midsummer campaigns. Promote town attractions, festivals, and seasonal goods to keep consumer interest alive and offset seasonal slowdowns.
The writer recalls examination day with strict shoe removal for cleanliness, fears some volunteers may not cross the ocean as the war lingers. Camp life features wrestling, boxing, diversions, and a tent pole caper ending in a collapsed tent. Harry sends an engaging letter that delights friends back home.
A general supper will be held on the R P Landon lawn located northwest of Malvern with directions from Glenwood Hillsdale and Silver City. The October 5 Friday event aims to raise funds for the Hillsdale Red Cross branch and invites all to attend.
The Glenwood community prepares for the annual Fall festival to be held October 10 11 and 12 at the Glenwood Armory. Premium lists promise prizes for corn apples vegetables small grain and flowers with domestic science sewing and fancy work prizes for women and girls. A larger corn show is hoped with many exhibits and a poultry display will be for exhibition only. Contact the secretary for a premium list if not received.
Epworth League members enjoyed a Friday evening event titled Children s party. Members dressed as children and played child names games. Animal crackers and stick candy were served. Each person brought a baby picture and partnered for supper by choosing one. Refreshments followed as attendees praised the fun and wrote it was a delightful kids event.
James McKown suffered a serious hand injury when a freight car door severed his left thumb. Dr Parsons splinted and sewed the digit with hope for saving it though recovery will be lengthy. Frank Gray lost his left thumb in a bee trap accident while assisting Jack Myers. he must carry the detached part in a slug and remains unable to use his hand for some time.
Harrison H. Woodrow, a central Mills County figure and early pioneer, died after years of poor health and a partial stroke. He had become blind some time ago and had limited town activity, with his passing a surprise to many who knew him.
Harrison H Woodrow born September 28 1839 in Tazewell County Illinois died after a decline from illness just before his 78th birthday He lived in Mills County Iowa most of his life including a long stretch on a farm east of Malvern He served in the 29th Iowa Company Ic during the Civil War and was later a founder of the Mills County Agricultural Society He married Hattie Wheeler in 1866 and had four children Cora Lula Lulu and Lewis W who were at his funeral He was renowned for progressive farming and livestock breeding practices and remained tied to his farm until moving to Malvern in 1910
