Vast Missouri river history described by Vestal in Big Muddy piece
The article chronicles the Missouri River from its muddy beginnings in Mills County to its far reaching course through the Dakotas and Montana. It blends natural changes and human history, noting Indigenous origins, early exploration by Marquette and Bourgmond, 19th century steamboat traffic, and cultural exchanges. It highlights flood dynamics, river restlessness, and Vestal’s portrait of Missouri’s influence on settlement, trade, and defense of western expansion.
