Malvern MCS Final Month Calendar of Year End Activities

Malvern Community Schools publish a calendar of year end events. Activities span May 6 to May 29 including senior tests, district and state track meetings, drama, music concerts, assemblies, graduations, a baccalaureate, commencement, athletic banquets, and awards. Some events require admission fees at various venues.

Nishna Valley Class of 1976 Graduation and Baccalaureate

The Nishna Valley High School plans a sixteenth annual commencement for 38 seniors next Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the gym auditorium complex with Rev. Robert Bartlett giving the invocation and benediction. Principal Donald Lee will announce valedictorian and salutatorian, five seniors will give addresses, and diplomas will be presented by Board President Russell Smith. The high school band under Maestro Jim Bawden will play processional and recessional. The Class of 1976 names include Jerry R Adams and Michael D Bienfait among others. Baccalaureate services are set for Sunday May 9 at 8 p.m. with cantatas and sermons by Rev. James Kunce.

Butterflies Are Free to Entertain Malvern Audience Friday

Malvern sees Old Creamery Theatre Company present Butterflies Are Free at 8 p.m. Friday in the high school gym with Rich Burk as Don Baker and Kathryn Drury as Jill Tanner. The show is part of a three show community series. other Friday events include a 10 a.m. performance of A Dandy Yankee Doodly Do and a mime workshop Saturday morning. Bernie Saggan to speak at Malvern booster athletic fete

Bernie Saggan executive secretary of the Town High School Athletic Association will headline the Malvern booster club event at the school gym. A 7 p.m pollock supper opens the evening with rolls and beverages provided. The banquet honors seventh through twelfth graders involved in football basketball track and summer baseball and softball for girls and boys and mentors. The Fan of the Year Award will be presented by Richard Henderson. Saggan, longtime Iowa high school athletics overseer since 1967, is a Buena Vista graduate with a Master’s from the University of Montana and current Big Eight basketball officials supervisor.

Mills County Joins Census Plan To Create Three Tracts

Mills County will be divided into three census tract districts under a MAPA plan approved May 3 by the county board. Eastern tract covers Anderson Silver Creek Indian Creek and White Cloud townships. western tract covers remaining townships east of US 275. Glenwood forms the third tract. Projections show population rise to about 15 300 by 2000 from 11 832 in 1970, with Glenwood expected to gain the most.

Henderson Bicentennial celebration honors leaders amid tragedy

A large Henderson crowd welcomed Minnie Allensworth and Mayor Bill Harbor as they received the Bicentennial flag and certificate. tragic tractor overturn killed Wagon Wheel Saddle Club head Jack Smith of Macedonia, canceling a pageant but future performances planned. Dinner supported Little League, and a new park with a flagpole was dedicated. Dorothy Buckingham represented the State Bicentennial Commission and memory flags were unveiled for Robert Allensworth.

Local thieves raid Malvern stores in early morning break-in

Malvern reports show break-in spree by unknown thieves Tuesday night at Bucky's Bar Erma's Worry and Waller Transfer. About $200 taken with minor damage. Waller Transfer shows rear window entry, office door jimmied, safe cracked with crowbar and sledge hammer, about $100 stolen, rest scattered. no mention of high-value radios.

NV Musicians Shine With I Ratings At State Contest

The Nishna Valley School Music Department earned I ratings for the Boys Chorus Girls Chorus Mixed Chorus and Concert Band at the State Large Group Contest in Sidney. The band then traveled to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City for a national festival while fifth through seventh graders performed at Henderson’s Bicentennial flag ceremony. Separately burglaries at Waller Buckner and Erma’s yielded cash losses with police investigating and clues listed by Marshal McClure.

Spring Fling Concert Delights Malvern High School Tonight

The Malvern Junior and Senior High School Music Department presents its annual Spring Fling at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gym. The program features state contest groups including saxophone and clarinet quartets, mixed doubles, girls sextet, Joel Waymire and Tim Bedsworth duet, plus Junior High Band and Chorus and Senior High mixed chorus and band. Attire is informal with boys in leisure suits or sport coats and girls in dresses.

Malvern Bands Shine at Sidney Meet With Top Ratings

Malvern mixed chorus earned a Division I superior rating at the State Large Group Music contest, outshining earlier efforts despite 20 freshmen among 48 performers. The senior band received a Division II excellent rating, with “Quesada” and other pieces performed. near-term promise shown as 21 of 44 members are freshmen. Special thanks to accompanist Bill Gilbert.

Henderson bicentennial ceremony marred by tragedy

Henderson marked its bicentennial with a noon ceremony led by the Nishna Valley junior band under Tracy Ryan and a community women's chorus. A 51 year time capsule was buried in a park vault containing Henderson's history, officials, donors, park plans, prices, the day’s program, and a Bicentennial token. Carroll Phillips read Henderson’s history while James Paul delivered the American Creed. Special guests included Larry Brandstetter of Red Oak and Ray Walton from Tom Harkin’s Council Bluffs office. Rev. Fred Coggburn gave the benediction.
