Emerson Iowa February 28 The Sub-District Declamatory Contest at Emerson drew representatives from twelve schools in Oratorical Dramatic and Humorous classes. Emerson’s Earl Cramer won Oratorical first with A Plea for Cuba. others included Carl Piper Corning and Kate Douglas Wiggins of Glenwood in drama. Malvern and Glenwood sent large delegations. finals go to Southwest Iowa District Contest at Dexter.

Supreme Judge Horace E. Deemer of the Iowa Courts died at his Red Oak home at 2 20 am after a lengthy illness. Officials said his death followed a nervous breakdown caused by overwork and his wife's ill health. Born in Indiana in 1858, he was 68 and had served on the state supreme bench since 1894, regarded as one of the nation's ablest judges.

Death of Mrs Sarah Woodrow in Malvern burial
The body of Mrs. Sarah Woodrow widow of Stephen Woodrow was brought to Malvern for interment. She died at her Bedford Iowa home on Saturday February 24 at eighty seven years of age. Funeral services were held from the late home the following Sunday. Her husband died years ago. She lived in Mills county for many years and her cousin H H Woodrow J W Walker of Bedford and L B Iliff of Chicago accompanied the remains to Malvern.

Eliza May Rankin Remembered in Hillsdale Service
Eliza May Rankin died after four days of suffering at Edmundson hospital on February 18. Born October 24, 1866 in Beaunecau county Illinois she lived most of her life in Mills County Iowa and the Black Hills years. Funeral services were held February 21 at Hillsdale church with Rev. P. D. Conaway and Rev. B D Goodrich. burial in Glenwood cemetery. Rankin leaves a widowed father three brothers and two sisters who mourn her devoted life.
