Cull Poultry to Make Room for New Layers

Poultry specialist William R Whitfield of New Jersey State College notes the industry must cull over 40 percent of the laying flock since last November to make room for next year’s layers. July egg output varied widely from 7.6 to 17 eggs per hen among the top and bottom 10 flocks, with an average 12.0 eggs for the month and 3.8 eggs above last year’s pace for the year to date. The year’s flock has averaged 110 eggs per hen so far.

Dark yolks in eggs from different feeds confuse quality cue

The article explains that green teed and yellow corn can darken yolks, making it hard to judge egg quality. Dark yolks may result from feed or exposure to heat, so dark yolks do not guarantee interior freshness. Light yolks appear with white corn, wheat, buckwheat, and oats, and uniform color and size remain the standard of quality.

Fall lime and tillage guidance for winter wheat and corn ground

Soil extension workers at Iowa State College advise applying lime now for winter wheat ground to be seeded to clover or alfalfa next spring. They also suggest sowing corn ground to small grain and clover or alfalfa later if needed, noting fall is suitable for lime and some tillage while preparing fields.

Fall Thistles Wither If Timely Tillage and Lime

Farmers should cut thistles after budding, plow and summer fallow until frost, then plant corn or alfalfa to suppress growth. Lime the soil after plowing if many thistles remain, and continue cultivation. Alfalfa on fertile, sweet soil helps defeat thistles, while chlorate sprays work best when timed before or after blooming. Thorough, repeated treatments and persistent effort are required for success.
