American food prices rise as costs bite households

American consumers still enjoy lower food costs versus many nations but prices edged up in early 1986. Dr. Richard Edwards of Texas A&M notes disposable income spent on food rose to about 16 percent from 15 percent over the past decade, with more meals eaten away from home and a rising share of spending going to processing and retailing. The farm value from each food dollar declines to roughly 26 cents overall, while 12 million work in food production and marketing and 3.5 million in related sectors. Growth in convenience stores and fast food sales, now $2.2 billion, mark shifts in the U.S. food system.
