Porter Brothers Claim Oregon Trunk Line Interest In Central Oregon Rail Route

The Portland Journal reports a potential Hill Harriman race for access to Central Oregon with the Deschutes canyon route as a key path. Porter brothers deny Hill ownership while hinting at Oregon Trunk Line ties and survey activity by Bethel and Nelson. Rights of way extend 160 miles south from Deschutes mouth with limited early business in the canyon segment.

Oregon Trunk Sale Denied by Promoter

W F P Nelson promoter of the Oregon Trunk Line denies that Hill interests bought surveys and rights of way up the Deschutes Canyon. The denial comes after reports claiming Hill Mabrlian and others purchased property rights and railroad surveys. The property owners Nelson Williamson and Porter state no such purchase occurred.

Prineville Told To Boil Water

Prineville Oregon officials order all local water users to boil water before domestic use after State Bacteriologist finds bacillus coli in the supply. Officials say no typhoid danger or epidemic. fault traced to mains though water comes from deep artesian wells. A past case in Shaniko linked to a town reservoir seam.

County court opens in Bend with Judge H. Ellis presiding

Prineville Journal notes Judge H. Ellis of Bend opens the new county court this week. Also, W H Kilmer of Seattle buys U S Cowles sheep ranch east of Madras for about 10000, plans cattle and frogs, to move soon. Sale via Ora Van Tassel of Madras. Crook County Journal reports R D Powell buys an 80 thresher for alfalfa, to thresh 100 acres this Fall and later neighbors’ fields. alfalfa seed fine for ordinary thresher. Readership also cites calm railroad sentiment in Central Oregon versus Willamette Valley expansion.

Harriman Promises Central Oregon Rail Extension

railroad magnate Harriman visited Portland and renewed promises to immediately build a Central Oregon railroad, with the Central Oregon and Tillamook lines named as first projects. A Pelican Bay conference with coast officials followed, while routes into Central Oregon remain undecided though Deschutes route favored by many. A neighborly agreement with Hill interests was hinted at to dispel talk of Hill invading Harriman territory.

Hay Fire Destroys Stacks in Haystack Neighborhood

Lightning struck a stack of hay belonging to Jease Eads in Haystack Sunday morning, setting it afire and destroying the stack along with an adjoining one. Neighbors aided in saving two other stacks, while Eads, away visiting, learned of the loss after the flames had consumed the stacks during a severe storm with multiple near strikes.

Dentist Coming to Madras October 6

Dr Hatolt Clark announces a visit to Madras on October 6 to perform a full range of dental work. He will provide services at the local clinic, inviting residents to schedule.
