Harriman Sends Survey Teams for Deschutes Canyon Route

Assistant Chief Engineer Chase led Harriman engineers inspecting the Deschutes canyon route from Madras to Trout Creek. The party camps near Lamonta and follows the old Oregon Eastern survey, with plans to extend south toward Klamath Falls after completing the Deschutes work.

Harriman Seek Right of Way Along Deschutes River

Five landowners along the Deschutes in Crook county face condemnation by Harriman interests to build a Deschutes Railway route from The Dalles toward Bend and the Klamath country. Attorney W W Colton filed proceedings. the plan could open 800000 acres of irrigated lands and challenge rival Hill interests amid a large engineering presence in the canyon.

Deschutes Route Described for Oregon Trunk Line

Mr Cotton outlined the Deschutes road project to run from near the mouth of the Deschutes along the O B R to Crook County and into the Klamath country. The Deschutes road is to be built by Porter Bros W P Nelson and PD Williamson as railroad contractors.

County road through Lyle cap sought for Prineville line

Hieps aim to secure a county road from Lyle Brown gap to the Prineville Shaniko road by circulating a petition for the January County Court term. The route currently runs over private land and was only opened by Weavie Brown with expectations of future fencing and posts. The move seeks county action to establish the road and also adjust the Sagebrush flat route, plus formalize the Masa county road across Stokker and Trotter lands to relieve heavy travel and avoid damages.

Narrow escape at D I P F Co headgate sparks town tale

Frank Brown narrowly avoided drowning while removing splash boards at the D I P F Co headgate. A long pike pole slipped, sending him into a swift wasteway. He leaped onto a rock then again into the water, was swept toward the headgates and slammed against wire netting before crawling out with bruised ribs. An auto race at Saturday’s fair featured J H Beckley’s car against five horses in relays, clocking 7 20 with the machine overtaking each horse. J J Jackson, longtime bailiff, serves on Crook county jury in this term, previously ranching in Agency Plain area.

Crook County Fair Highlights Fine Draft Horse Stock

The Crook County Fair showcased premier draft horse exhibits with Percherons led by G Springer’s mare earning first place and Kitty second, plus prize wins for Shire Stallions from Baldwin Sheep and Land Co. The Belgian class saw Haystack Association success, and Clydesdales honored by Prose and Montgomery. Crook county’s stock gains praise for import-driven improvement and high grade draft stock.

Court Absolve Marion R. Biggs in Disbarment Case

The Oregon Supreme Court sustains the demurrer to disbarment proceedings against Marion R. Biggs of Prineville. It finds no adequate averment of crime or misconduct to justify removal, noting Biggs was convicted of subornation of perjury in federal court and that such crime does not by itself meet the statute’s moral turpitude standard.

Paxton Introduces Black Barley On Madras Ranch

G L Paxton unveils a new dark purplish barley named Black Barley. He planted March 2 six miles north of Madras, harvesting yields of 11 bushels per acre versus 6 for nearby wheat. Bearded hull-less grain shells like wheat and Paxton plans 60 bushels for seed at 5 cents a pound. Seed cost him about 10 cents.

Coal Find Near Paineville Reported in Crook County

In Crook county a coal vein near Herman Poch’s property three miles up Ochoco creek from Paineville is said to yield a fair grade of steam and heating fuel. Poch halted sharing exact location while miners press for the strike details.
