Senator Fulton Speaks on Campaign Issues at Madras

Senator Charles W. Fulton of Astoria Oregon addressed the Madras crowd on campaign issues praising Taft and denouncing Democratic planks on bank deposits and injunctions The speech drew farmers and townspeople then continued to Bend and Prineville with local attendance and a noon dismissal for students.

Rosebud Reservation land lottery opens for 800000 acres

Government runs a historic land lottery at Rosebud South Dakota with 800000 acres in quarter sections. Registration since the 5th has surpassed 60000 names but is expected to close short of that total. Drawings begin October 10 under Judge James W. Whitten, federal land office chief legal officer.

First Fall Rains Bring Relief Across County

A general soaking rain, the first of the fall season, fell Sunday morning and lasted about three days. Farmers welcome the moisture for fall plowing and pasture growth while stockmen expect better grass. Dust abated and roads, dusty and holey, will be ready for freighting. rain appears widespread across the county.

M Redfield of Bend bought the Gus Zemke homestead one mile north of the German Methodist church. The 100 acre tract is nearly all in cultivation and lies with irrigation interests in Bend country. The Zemke gate was made through McTaggart Lueddemann.

High Praise for Madras Wheat Comes from The Dalles

Andrus sold a wagon load of No 1 graded wheat in The Dalles last week and was told it was the best wheat of the season. He received 86 cents a bushel and reports strong interest in the Madras district. The grain came from the Andrus ranch on Agency Plains and was carried to The Dalles with fruit.

Runaway Accident Victim Dies After Weeks of Injury

Mrs J C Crogan of Antelope dies from injuries suffered in a Cherry creek road runaway accident weeks earlier. Mr and Mrs Brogan and their youngest child were injured. Mrs Brogan sustained fractures of both limbs. Delayed medical care led to swollen fractures and ongoing serious condition. Mrs Brogan is related to Mrs J C Robinson of this place.

Buccy Salesmen Fined in Oregon Peddler Case

In Wasco County Judge Bradshaw fines a defendant $300 for peddler license violations by Eastern Carriage Co reps Wright and Ogan. They appeal to the Oregon Supreme Court, challenging the law's constitutionality. A Hood River county case against the same men pending.

Corn Exhibit At County Fair By Southeast Rancher

Tillman Reuter of a southeast ranch will exhibit farm products at Prineville county fair this week. He plans to display several corn varieties and praises the quality and heavy yields of corn grown locally. Last year he supplied seed corn from his farm to most farmers in the area.

Deschutes Co. bid on Benham Falls project deemed high

The State Land Board considered the Deschutes Irrigation and Power Co. bid of 60 per acre to reclaim 74 000 acres near Bend for the Benham Falls project but signals indicate the price is too steep. Twin Falls Land and Water Co. may pursue the contract at a lower price. The board will send State Engineer Lewis to inspect the land and report. A new rule allows settlers to prove up after 80 days residence and 75 percent cultivation with a four room house.

The Prineville Journal notes large wagonloads of wheat from the Madras country hauled to the Prineville Flouring Mills. Despite reports of reduced wheat this year, mills show hustle and bustle with 16 000 bushel elevator overflowing and 5 000 bushels arriving in two weeks.

Bend smallpox reports overstate danger says patient recovering

Reports to Portland papers exaggerated the Bend smallpox case. The patient is recovering with a tight attack and should be in good health after quarantine. No new cases have developed, and the town remains calm with normal school, travel, and business activity.

A five person railroad surveying party hurried through town at noon on Tuesday, heading north. The group included three new workers and two older men, moving quickly along Male Street and Oven Pied before vanishing toward Crooked River.
