Central Oregon reports a new 180 foot deep well supplying inexhaustible water via the Deschutes Railway con tract. Oregon Well Drilling struck the first flow at 90 feet, with a surface pump delivering a strong supply for Madras and local farms. The Deschutes company and town celebrate the water source's potential.
First county wool sale under bid plan set for July 14 at the Y Warehouse in Madras. About 600000 pounds of clips to be offered with privately sold lots and shipments from the Hay Company depot. Lead lot weighs 10998 pounds. organizer Porfiry & Hartley report progress.
Two Portland firms bid for Crook County Water, Light and Power assets at Cline Falls on the Deschutes River. An option of 30 days is offered, with a $25,000 guaranty bond and city contracts to be honored. Buyers must install a transmission line within 90 days and supply water and power at reasonable rates.
Mrs. Alonzo Tolbert of Culver died after a water wagon ran away down a hill near the Ruble place. Her husband suffered serious but not life threatening injuries as the family travels to fetch water. The accident left her neck broken and her body crushed by a water barrel.
C F McDermott rode through Madras heading to Sisters with a sixty horns donkey grubbing outfit. The crew, nine men strong when active, will clear about 600 trees daily under several large land clearing contracts.
Fifteen railway systems joined with the Great Northern to transport exhibition cars showcasing Oregon Washington Montana and Minnesota products. Lecturers explained modern farming to thousands across the eastern and middle western states while trains covered 12000 miles drawing nearly a million visitors. The Great Northern also runs experimental farms and educates settlers on scientific farming methods as Jas Hill drives regional agricultural development.
Tom W. Kilmer was acquitted in U S District Court Portland on selling liquor to Indians. Defense claimed beer went to white man Steel not Indian George Orr. Orr present and loaned money for purchase. Oscar Rust convicted on two counts for selling liquor to an Indian.
A fine stockyard with 12 carloads capacity has been completed in the Deschutes railway yards. The yard is painted white and looks neat. Officials expect work on a new depot for the company to start soon as construction crews have most depots along the line nearly finished.
Frank Forest of The Dalles reports plans to resume drilling at the Grizzly oil well where work paused at about 700 feet. A California oil prospector was expected to arrive to take up the project but delays persist. Forest notes promising indications before stoppage and gas samples were obtained without discouragement, suggesting potential success if the rock layer is penetrated.
Leonard Logan of Hay Creek and Faris E Shawe of Spokane were married Wednesday evening June 21 at the Methodist parsonage by Rev M W Weaver. The couple plan to live on the groom's Haycreek homestead with the bride’s mother and two brothers present.
Coroners jury finds A. A. Paine was crushed by a steel boom while on Willow Creek bridge in Crook County Oregon. They blame Edward Meyers for neglect of rope duties. no authorities action yet. Paine, of Seattle, was buried in the local cemetery last Sunday.
Water flowed into the new city well starting at 15 feet and surged after 22 feet, flooding the work area. The city awaits an engine and pump purchased in Portland by Councilman J. C. Robinson. Jeffery & Burton plan to start work on the water system in early July.
Representatives of Central Oregon commercial interests will meet in Prineville June 30 and July 3 to promote a regional development league. The aim is to boost development across the area and reduce sectional strife through cooperation. At last Monday’s school meeting John McTaggart was named director and S. E. Gray clerk. only 84 voters attended.
Deschutes River project rushes to finish the largest bridge in Oregon. Forty ton steel girders will form the next span as mas sive towers rise and the fourth big span is put in place. Workers rivet and sort steel day and night while onlookers gather on Agency Plains and canyon overlooks to watch the erection.
Adelbert D. Lang of Fort Rock Lake County and Grace Irvine of Couer d Alene Idaho wed Monday afternoon June 19 at the Methodist parsonage in this city. Rev W M Weaver officiated.
Deschutes Railway plans a 65 000 gallon water tank on the hill at the Agency Plain depot. Water will be pumped from a new well just north of town and distributed gratis to farmers, cutting heavy hauling from Madras. Land was bought from Andrus Bros for a pipe line and right of way. Central Oregon Well Drilling will move its rig to Madras after completing work at Gateway. The railroad may use the tank for locomotives, signaling Madras as a potential division point.
Workmen drilling for a hotel septic system at the Jones Land Co site pierced an underground cavern 18 feet below ground. A dynamite blast released a cold air surge through a 1.5 inch pipe 35 feet deep, suggesting the explosion entered a cavern. The Redmond company will test cavern capacity for sewerage.
