An accident occurred as a wagon from Shaniko to Canyon toppled, crushing a freighter who was dragged under a freight wagon. He was shielded by others, placed in blankets, and rushed to surgical care for injuries.
The letter describes severe delays in Madras mail outgoing service, noting the stage now departs at 7 a m instead of 1 30 pm to connect with Prineville and Shaniko trains. Frustration at road conditions and routes, with calls for restoring the prior arrangement via Madras for faster delivery to interior points.
A sale of Madras town lots to A L Carson of Portland valued at 1700 is reported. The property lies near the Oregon Trunk Line station grounds and Carson may start a wholesale and retail building materials business including lime cement brick lath in Madras.
G J Weller, once a local resident now living in Oklahoma, returned to Madras on Wednesday to manage his farm five miles east. He preferred Oklahoma but extreme and alternating weather harmed his health, prompting a return to Central Oregon where the climate is unmatched.

They praised Madras as a distributing point and explored the Deschutes line north of town, Metolius, Culver Junction, Prineville, and plans to extend toward Bend during their investigation of farming lands and future rail service.
Local Masons in Madras and vicinity hold two meetings to establish a lodge. A chartered lodge will organize here with at least 10 members. Many area Masons may transfer membership once formed.
The Oregon State Board of Forestry urges higher appropriations and a stronger protection system. It notes 350 million feet of merchantable timber worth $500 million now, potentially $5 billion as lumber, with 60 million feet burned costing $60 million. The board criticizes prior low forest protection spending and cites limited funding for fish and game protection and horticulture. Dr. Clark the Dentist will visit Madras February 1 and 2 for dental work with early calls for vestment preparations.
