Hill System Increases Capital for Spokane to Vancouver

Trustees of the Spokane Portland and Seattle Railroad met in Vancouver to day and increased the capital stock from 25000000 to 62000000 in preparation for consolidating the Hill lines in Oregon. James J Hill aims to unite the North Bank Oregon Trunk Astoria & Columbia River Oregon Electric and United Railways. President Louw W Hill arrived from Spokane with F W Brown and John F Stevens, signing papers drawn by Carey Kerr.

A new ferry boat is being constructed to operate across the Deschutes River to Warm Springs Agency, replacing the one carried downstream weeks ago. Owner Robert Smith says it will be ready to operate in a few weeks.

Oregon rail expansion urged by Great Northern president

Louis W. Hill, head of the Great Northern, visited Portland and urged Oregon promotion through state advertising. He discussed routes south of Bend toward Medford and Klamath Falls, favored completing the Oregon Trunk to Madras, and proposed a public event for driving the last spike with officials and citizens in attendance.

City begins earnest work on Madras water system

Engineers started a permanent survey for a well reservoir and mains south of the town to build a gravity system with an eight inch trunk main along Fifth Street. The project, costing about 10000 dollars, will provide fire protection and domestic supply for years once plans are approved and construction proceeds.

Extensive Plans For Railroad Day

Madras residents gear up for a celebration marking the arrival of the Oregon Trunk line and the first train into town the gateway to Central Oregon. Invitations go to John F. Stevens and Hill system officials while the Commercial Club leads planning with local groups. A monster ox barbecue is planned to showcase Central Oregon’s resources as Louis W. Hill may attend and a last spike ceremony is hoped to be held.
