Oregon Banks Return to Normal After Holiday Suspension

Camp shut down leaves 300 workers unpaid on Mount Hood project

Three hundred laborers, mostly Austrians, were laid off as the Mount Hood road camp shut down due to bad weather and incomplete payrolls. They waited in Portland for pay while watchmen guard the silent camps. Archie Mason, contractor, will move crews to Klamath County for winter work on the extension of the line toward California.

Died in the Woods Near Pine Mountain

The body of an unknown man was found in timber near Pine Mountain south of Bend by two Indians. Rancher John McPherson and Melher son notified Sheriff Elkine after confirmation. The body was badly decomposed with no signs of struggle or foul play, suggesting a natural death.

Settlers to Get Title on Reclaimed Deschutes Lands

The General Land Office approves patents for 38,400 acres in Crook County Oregon reclaimed by the Deschutes Irrigation and Power Company. Settlers nearby Bend and Redmond will receive deeds from the state, boosting Crook County wealth by about 1 million dollars at current prices. Timber claims scarce in Crook County as buyers set sights on Central Oregon

Timber land locator Joel McCollum says Crook County claims are nearly exhausted after two years of influx by landseekers. Lynde and Julia Baker and Walter Hogan were among recent claimants filing on 120 acre parcels due to scarcity. Lumber syndicates are purchasing after filings, signaling future railroad access and mills along Deschutes and Metolius headwaters with location fees of 100 to 200 dollars.

Sanford resumes business in Madras with Bablu transfer

A. C. Sanford returns from Portland and reaches a deal with RK L Bablu to take charge of the Madras shop formerly run by Sanford Sil & Company. Transfer of property to be completed at once. Sanford begins new venture locally. Myrtle Loveland returns home from Haights station after several weeks away.
