Growth in Crook County Population Surges Despite Rail Gap

Census figures show Crook County with 9 315 residents in 1910 nearly tripling its 1900 count of 8 964 while Multnomah reaches 226 621 statewide population 672 765. The region east of the Cascades gains as rail lines Deschutes road and Oregon Trunk target dry farming and stock regions, boosting immigration despite no railroad in Crook County.

Fatal hunting trip ends with self-inflicted gunshot

Wallace Williams 18 son of Mr and Mrs W S Williams of Agency Plains died Sunday noon after he dismounted a wagon while duck hunting with V Z Branstetter and George Hurt. The pistol discharged, entering his left side near the heart and exiting near the spine. The coroner’s jury ruled accidental. Funeral held at Mountain View Schoolhouse. The article also reports a 14 1 4 pound turnip from Opal Prairie.

The state Farmers' Educational and Co-Operative union elected officers for the coming year at last week’s closing session. John W. McAllister of LaGrande is president, Price Robinson of Coquille is vice president, F. A. Sikes of Milton is secretary, H. Richards of The Dalles is chaplain, Fred Krusow of Grass Valley is door keeper, and F. S. Biddow of Holdman is conductor.
