Rural telephone line from Prineville to Madras planned

A new rural telephone company will build a through line from Prineville to Madras and sell stock to fund the project. Subscribers near Madras pay about 50 dollars for ownership of their instrument with five cent switching to Prineville. The firm plans multiple rural lines and a link to the Government line at Warm Springs ferry, reaching Columbia River points. Rains Trigger Major Landslides on Oregon Trunk Near Camp 4

Heavy rains cause slides along the Oregon Trunk near camp 4 five miles down Willow Creek canyon. An estimated 20 000 cubic yards of earth and rock fill the grade, blocking the line and delaying repairs for weeks. Authorities warn more rock and earth may descend with damp weather, and blasting concessions may have contributed to the danger.

Central Oregon records 3.23 inches of precipitation for the month with 0.75 inches fell from Sunday evening to Monday morning. Heaviest monthly total was 0.85 inches on the eighth. Sisters Man Is Rolled In Diphtheria Quarantine Case

Train wreck disrupts mail service near DeMoss Springs

A southbound freight on the Columbia Southern derailed at Bridge 34 near DeMoss Springs last Friday, delaying interior mail for several hours. Madras mail arrived only early this week as road conditions between here and Shaniko severely hinder travel and freighting remains nearly impossible. Locals say the railroad cannot reach Madras soon enough.
