A report notes three separate haul incidents in a railroad yard, with bicycles and a telephone taken from the area. Police are investigating the thefts and seeking information on suspects or missing items.
A Sunday theft at the passenger station saw more than 8000 in cured meats taken from a stock car. Workmen observed a truck and the car where meat lots were disturbed. Police investigated but no offenders yet named. A bicycle and a public booth money box also reported missing or disturbed. The heist occurred while the car stood at the freight depot.
May 31 reports a labor disturbance at Greenbay Mills with Governor Blain and Brown officials discussing shipment delays. Strikes halted operations, crews blocked routes, and local leaders prepared to deploy National Guard if needed. Over 1,000 workers joined the action, as talks aimed to prevent further disruption.
Fred E. Gordon of Macomb purchased a half interest in the Miner Book Store and adopts The Miner Book Store name. Gordon, a 1914 Macomb High graduate, returns from Crawfordsville after Wabash College to assume duties June 1, attends the 84th annual commencement June 11, and is known for football leadership and friendly ties in the community.
The Senate Finance Committee will appoint a committee to investigate needs and problems of proposed soldiers bonus legislation. Senator Penrose chairs. Senator McCumber of North Dakota leads the panel to examine government costs and practical issues before enactment.
Washington May 31 Informal feelers on a potential international armament reduction agreement have been sent out by the American government to gauge foreign government attitudes before formal negotiations begin.
From Panama Mr and Mrs Ralph Kirkpatrick are visiting from the Panama Canal Zone. They are former McDonough county residents with he from Macomb and she from Good Hope. Mr Kirkpatrick is a government engineer.
Springfield May 31 President Griffin of the Board of Trade says passage of Bill 284 would slash 20 cents per bushel, as House debates Townleyism and farmers rally hundreds of Illinois acres. Illinois Agricultural Association reports 400 leaders present. A poll shows 84 votes in favor of Bill 283 to regulate the Board of Trade by Agriculture Department.
Residents of the Fourth ward protest a plan by Superintendent Lynch and the Macomb school board to move third and fourth graders to other ward buildings to expand high school capacity. Opponents cite longer walking distances and potential penalties for Fourth ward pupils, while supporters argue the move accommodates more students amid rising attendance. The board may hold a special meeting to hear objections and decide on the proposal.
In Colchester Illinois bloodhounds aided by Thos Tones traced a home intruder after a late Saturday night assault on Blanche Wemhoene. The man fled on horseback or by buggy, leaving horsehair on a tree as the dogs followed a trail three miles long to a tree.
Baltimore report says the bomb fell from its fastenings as the aircraft ascended. In Washington two enlisted men were killed and three officers plus nine enlisted men injured in the Aberdeen proving grounds explosion.
Washington May 31 The Milwaukee Leader and New York Call were restored today to second class mailing privileges by the post office department. Burleson denied mail use due to wartime matter. Victor Berger, editor, was convicted under the espionage act, a conviction later set aside by the Supreme Court.
The 76 pupils across Macomb Public School earning perfect records are listed by ward and grade. They were never tardy nor absent all year and credit health and punctuality for their achievement, with note of districts from First to Junior High and Senior High schools.
Madison May 31 Governor Blaine vetoed the Matheson prohibition enforcement bill calling it indefinite and in conflict with the federal Volstead act He condemned the Anti-Saloon League Lobby for drafting the measure calling it pernicious and urged passage of a new enforcement bill free of their influence
