Bond Fixed at 75000 for Men Suspected in Officer Killing

Chicago May 27 Bi Murphy and Fred Mader known as czars in a labor war were ordered released on bonds of 75000 each after eleven days in jail. They were indicted for the murder of Police Lieutenant Lyons who was shot May 9 during bombings linked to wage protests at Landis building trades dispute. Judge Harry Miller voided further detention, ruling no evidence was presented and releasing them on bail pending trial.

Thompson Becomes Illinois Chief Justice at Age 34

Floyd F E Thompson of Rock Island will be sworn in as Illinois chief justice when the court reconvenes June 6 in Springfield. At 34 he will be the youngest chief justice in the nation and among the youngest in state history. Since 1919 he has served on the Illinois Supreme Court, authored 239 opinions, and previously held Rock Island County states attorney post starting in 1912 as the first Democrat to hold that office.
