Springfield May 19 The Illinois Prohibition bill passed the senate 30 to 12 after a bitter fight. Senators Buck Jewell supported it. The measure aims to prosecute liquor law violators in state courts and divert fines to state coffers. Senator Wheeler proposed a separate bill to appoint a prohibition commissioner with 25 investigators at a $6000 salary. Senator Clark condemned the legislation as the most vicious for infringing home rights.
Peoria May 19 Oscar Strand of Monmouth elected president of the Illinois Association of Baking Industries at the annual convention. Eugene Lipp of Chicago named vice president and Gov. Geisler of Joliet re elected treasurer. Next convention will be in Decatur. Chas. Schnare of Macomb attended a mobile meeting.
Middleboro Massachusetts May 18 a rogue papered with cancelled United States Postage stamps stands monument to the industry of mom O. Lawyer of this town. More than 20 000 stamps of 184 varieties have been used and in denomination they represent issues from one to 30 cents. The room is 12 feet square. Mr. Sawyer has been collecting stamps for a quarter of a century.
Chas Applegate, long ill with heart trouble, is now able to sit up part of the time. Friends express relief at his improvement and hope for further recovery.
Old Salem Illinois May 19 Lincoln noted as Illinois greatest son honored at the dedication of a reconstructed street as a state park. Governor Small and Lieutenant Governor Sterling address a crowd with a 150 minute tribute to Lincoln. Music instrument sale to fund Macomb Band aligns with city efforts.
New York reports Ellis Island placed under strict quarantine after the typhus death of five year old Andrew Steinbach, a Jugo-Slav boy. Approximately 1,700 immigrants were moved to the Hoffman's Island detention station.
R A Sullivan grocer is hospitalized at Holmes with a badly fractured ankle after leaping from his buggy to stop a runaway when the horse began to run after a shaft came loose. He faces a lengthy recovery. Win Tunes assists at the store. Mr and Mrs Solon Robinson of Bushnell travel by auto to Lewistown Montana and plan a Canada visit on return.
An elderly patient at St Marys hospital swallowed $6 000 worth of radium during treatment for a malignant throat condition. Surgeons performed an operation to recover the substance from the stomach and the patient, who retained it for about two hours, suffered no ill effects. The radium belonged to the Quincy physicians association.
Mr. and Mrs Crum Powell of Crestwood Kentucky are the parents of a boy born May 15 The mother formerly Miss Anna Blodgett of this city daughter of the late Steve Blodgett
Macomb's baseball team, with a revised lineup, hosts the Abingdon Reserves, one of the season's strongest. Corson and Lucas form the visiting battery, Corson a noted pitcher, Kilpatrick at center field, and Frank Pierce pushing to improve the infield around Dutch Howell. The Macomb club aims to field Western Illinois' top amateur squad by midseason. The game time is listed as 3 o'clock.
Local and Cook County authorities chase James Witt alias James Joslyn James P O Neill in connection with slaying West Chicago Police Chief George Reihm. Witt travels in a Ford coupe with his wife and seven year old son, traces tied to Pekin and potential river crossings toward Iowa.
New York May 19 A Federal warrant is issued for the arrest of Giusippi DeSilippo truck man charged with attempting to destroy the United States assay office. Police note that Thomas Litz identified Titio Ligo as the death cart driver and said Silippo resembled him. Warrant issued by U S Commissioner Chas Sehally at Justice Department HQ.
Henrietta Wilson, nine, of Avon area, sues Mart Totin for 5000 in damages from injuries suffered August 1918 when a Prairie City band concert street crossing accident left her with skull fracture and long hospital stay. Trial details include jury selection in People v DeFord.
