Summer session starts at Thwarten Normal with classes for two groups finishing early. Organizers say the program aims to provide instruction and practical courses to students and staff.
A man attacked near the Arthur Knight farm east of town by several assailants failed to stop his vehicle and escaped, with deputies pursuing. Sheriff and deputies followed the fleeing party, who sped toward Macomb. The incident preceded the start of summer classes in the city, which brought many visitors and filled local housing.

He received facial scratches and chest soreness though escaped serious injury. Miss Flora Pennington aided him and he plans to rest several days.
A girl born this afternoon at the Bakers home south of town. Both mother and baby are doing nicely. This is the second Twilight Sleep child for Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Baker. Dr. Miner attended. Pays Fine. Hugh Wybrant paid a $5 fine and costs for running his car with the exhaust cut out on May 24. He appeared before Justice A. W. Falkenthal Saturday night.
William E Mason aged 70, Illinois congressman at large and former senator, lies seriously ill of a heart condition in his hotel room after a week’s confinement. Family says condition worsened late yesterday as House peace resolution debates and prospects of its passage affected him.
Louis Bowers, a farmer near Denmark Iowa, shot through a window at Mr. and Mrs. George Thompson while they slept. Believing them dead, he tried to hang himself from a tree. the rope broke, then a second rope held and a posse found his body. The Thompsons were only mildly injured.
The June session of county court was convened today but no business was transacted due to the clerk’s engagement with the board of supervisors. Jurors are to appear for duty next Monday morning.
Chief of Police Purdum praised auto drivers for good cooperation and observance of traffic rules on Saturday despite congestion. A few offenders were educated and corrected, with a warning that repeat offenses may bring serious results.
The Pioneer meeting schedule includes a 2:00 p m afternoon program at the courthouse with songs by the Martin quartet, remarks by the chairman, and talks on county early days by Thomas Gilmore W J Hainline Alex Holmes and David Graves among others. More than fifty United Brethren were baptized Sunday afternoon in a pond on Ed Landis farm northeast of Adair. The revival at the Adair U B Church led to the large number of converts and an outdoor ceremony was held due to weather and lack of arrangements earlier.
Chicago police chief Fitzmorris says 55 officers were discharged last Saturday and 250 more face the same fate unless eight hours work for eight hours pay is produced. He declares Chicago is the only city where crime is on the decline. Also notes travel to Des Moines for Shriner conclave.
Early morning thieves spent about an hour trying to start Louis Hammond’s Packard near Adair. Neighbors armed with guns pursued the robbers after a shot near the garage, but the group fled, leaving no injuries or recovered evidence.
Local American Legion post holds semi monthly meeting in club rooms tonight with a large attendance expected to transact important business.
